Interest check: Literally 3x3 fortress
« on: October 03, 2017, 03:02:23 am »

Well... 3x3+1, to include the staircase. Anyway, this would be a challenge succession game where you build all your fortress in a 3x3 area, with the possible exception of the Trade Depot, centered on the fort and aboveground. Are you interested?

Do you mean 3x3 or 3x3x3?

3x3xn. It would be deep, but still 3x3.

Oh, you mean 3x3 tiles, not embark tiles. Interesting idea, but by the gods stockpiles and workshops are going to be a headache.

Yeah, there is only a tiny bit of space. Enough to cram a workshop in each level at least. Or a tiiiiiiiiiiiny stockpile.

Need workshop and stairs. Workshops are 3x3.

Which is why I said 3x3+1. One tile is for the stairs.

Dining halls, nobles' quarters and other rooms, siege workshops...  I think that this may bit a bit too much.  In other words:  Par for the course, and thus perfect.  I wouldn't be taking a turn, personally, however.

I can foresee issues arising relating to mining for raw materials - allowed to dig beyond the 3x3(+1) area or not?

3x3 dining halls, but multilevel. Digging outside is allowed, but no stairs or buildings. And keep it minimal.

Regarding depot and siege workshop, you can build 5x5 initially and then de-construct the the outer edges I guess.

If you allow scaffolding, you could limit to 3x3 by using obsidian-casting to carve stairs directly into workshops. You can't fit a pump +input+output into 3x3, but you probably can use 3x3 minecart spiral + centre drop hole onto ramp that send minecart to fill with magma to bring magma up, depending on the layout of SMR. Though one should leave space for obsidian and tree farms (2z for each tree, jay) to obtain rock and wood beyond the initial digging. Maybe include a tile of partial aquier to have a water source in the 3x3 column.

I might be a little curious (I did create construct multiz, after all, partly to designate several z-levels of stairs at once), provided it meets some standard worldgen criteria, such as all races present and the closest goblin and human sites having at least 2k residents each.

This is interresting. But I believe 5x5 would be more practical.
For it allows some stupid cool dwarven contraptions.

With 3x3 you can't really manipulate much. No real minecart systems, no pumps, not a lot of room for magma.

5x5 (+1 for TD stairs) would keep it difficult enough by keeping it small. But it is bigger, with 278% of the 3x3 area !

I'm all into these stupid hard projects in DF. So I might play if given the time.

Edit : So we'll have 1x1 vanilla embark MapTile right ? There is no way to shrink the vanilla embark MapTile to make it 3x3 in-game-tile ? Right ?

Maybe with dfhack, though haven't tested anything, even i.e. modifying df.global.world.map and df.global.ui.map_edge nor pre-embark ui yet. I know you can use it to go beyond the regional map borders and that sites are divided internally at 300% zoom into 16x16 block columns, though, so a 16x16 fortress mode tiles embark being possible wouldn't surprise me.

(I wonder what FPS on that would be like.)

Good Armok, man! Are you crazy!? You could kill us all just by mentioning that!

Also, I'd be into this, 3x3 or 5x5. I personally prefer 3x3 for the challenge and the stupidity, but 5x5 to give us more space also is good.

By mentioning what?

Reading my post several times, I see no dangers?

I mean, maybe the enemies would enter map closer, but they were going to be pretty close anyway :V

My computer can barely last a year if it's a 5x5 embark, how-

...Ohh, wait. I misread.
You meant 16x16 ingame tiles, right? I was thinking embark tiles, you know, where you usually go 1-4x1-4 or else your computer dies in the long run.
