Tons of weapons, of gold, platinum, steel, spoilerite...I like to groom my dwarves to produce armour and weapon artifacts. Not sure which ones I like more tbh, as while the numerical stat% benefit is greater on weapons armour generally takes more resources, breaks easier and far longer time to get named.

I still kinda want to get a slade whip, but the process of getting that without hacking or modding is a little complicated.

Non-weapons, probably either the first artifact native gold door, or the spoilerite mechanisms attached to masterfully built and designed bridge.

My focus is on weird traps more than military, so:

Best: Building-destroyer-proof furniture, especially doors and hatches. But any furniture will do to distract a powerful enemy indefinitely.

Every adult dwarf who doesn't have a moodable skill trains up one level in masonry to increase the chances.

Worst: Any stone/wood/bonecraft: trinkets that don't even increase room value, plus now you have a legendary in a relatively useless resource-sucking skill. Annoyingly, children can get strange moods and always pick one of these.

Regardless of your favorite skills, pay close attention to the preferences of each dwarf, and when you get one that has a preference for an item you'd like, be sure to train that dwarf so their highest moodable skill produces that item.

For usefulness? Artifact floodgate, followed by doors or hatches.  Armor and weapons would come after that.

Most useless? Earrings or any trinket bauble that can't be placed.  (This will get better in the next update with "display cases".)

Wonder if I am the only one who plays with artifacts disabled?

As I play as humans, I cannot produce artefacts, much to my despair. I hope my dwarven guests will get to work tho !

My dwarfs have made some legendary bone armor though.

That's good for dealing with metal armor shortages.

I had a ruby floodgate in one game.

Reminds me, I once had a gemcutter make a bed out of a few lapis lazulis. That was pretty neat.

They can be irritating or distracting.  I've lost dwarves I liked to moods I couldn't possibly satisfy, for example.

That said, I do leave artifacts turned on unless I'm playing a modded species that I don't think should produce artifacts.

Anyway, it's been a long time since I've actually played, so I can't even remember any specific artifacts.  I suppose that means most were pretty crap.

I'm assuming you're modding your races with the [TRANCES] tag, since that's the only thing that gives strange moods. Not sure why Toady tied the two together like that.

The way they work is too random to my taste. I donīt like the way a novice weaponsmith can forge a weapon that far surpasses the best masterworks from legendary weaponsmiths, for basically no reason.

And I donīt like losing my favourite dwarf because he canīt find camel hair, either.

So yeah, I guess they can be exciting, but the way they function doesn't appeal to me.
