Zones to replace workshops
« on: October 20, 2017, 02:31:26 pm »

This has been suggested and considered before, and I have some thoughts on it.

- Workshops should still require building materials, more or less depending on how big you want to make it.
- Workshops can be resized like farm plots and floors
- Magma workshops should require something to hold magma, and Dwarves should be able to fill it with magma-safe buckets

Sizes should also be balanced, for example:

A larger workshop should work slower, but have a higher capacity for clutter

A smaller workshop should work faster, but become cluttered much faster.

This should be scaled accordingly to the original 3x3 (eg. A 2x2 shop would work 2.25x (9/4) faster, but have 44% capacity (4/9); a 5x5 workshop would work 36% as fast (9/25) and have 2.77x more capcity (25/9)

Yes, you're right, it has been suggested before. Find one of the many threads on workshops, zones, labor in general and add to the discussion if you've anything to add.

Right now by ignoring the instructions at the top of the page and therefore ignoring all the in-depth discussions which have taken place on most df dev topics over the past decade, you're coming across as if you're deliberately spamming the forum for fun. I'd like to think that's not the case as you seem to have played the game and have some idea about what you'd like to see. But almost everything you've filled the suggestions board with has been said before and therefore already seen and noted by Toady.

At least the [HORSEPLAY] thing wasn't suggested before...

The current idea for workshop zones (as far as I can remember) is that they'll be designated the same way a hospital would be; with things like anvils, furnaces, tables and looms being constructed in the same way beds, traction benches and chests are. Depending on the content of the zone will determine what kind of workshop it is.

Near the top right corner of the page you'll find a small search bar, throw in a few buzz words relevant to your suggestion in case there were any past discussions on the topic you'd like to contribute towards :).
