Merchants with anything worthwhile...
« on: October 25, 2017, 04:36:55 pm »

I'm finding it very hard to find merchants with anything of worth...the towns I've found have a pile of merchants in one area. And they're in little clusters, that sell a page full of cheese, or a bunch of vegetables, or a page full of crap clothing, or a couple pages of the same leather armour...they suck! And none of them have coin...no gem merchants..nothing useful...what gives?

Advice would be fantastic! Please!

You will need to find a city and look at the actual shops, market merchants are more limited then shop merchants. I have found some cool stuff. Most towns only have one or two weapon shops/armor shops though

Those elusive "shops" that supposedly have signs out front? I can never find any, I've roamed around several cities (white crossroads on the map), looking. At one I found a crappy little stronghold with a market, at another a market, at another just one random merchant with random crap...no actual shops...

Am I looking in the wrong place, or? Is it maybe a crappy world gen?? I'm so frustrated. I also wandered towards a supposedly "easy" quest, some skulking whatever, and before I reached the site I suddenly was pulled into an ambush but it said "you have a bad feeling" or somesuch instead of Ambush!, and I saw nothing to fight, but my companions ran away, and then all of a sudden a "lightning axeman" that looked like a snake icon just paralyzed me and then wiped me out hard. Sad days.

I've never experienced any of the problems you're describing. My guess would be a bad worldgen, try generating a new world. If it keeps up, I would report it on the bugtracker.

While fast travelling in cities, there's a list of what's in the area you're fast travelling over. Don't slow travel searching for shops.

Yeah, cities are usually filled with shops, and yes, they do have signs in front, did you put points into reading? It could also be a bad worldgen, but all cities have shops so taht shouldnt be the reason. In fast travel it should also tell you the shops that are close by (and tavern names etc) post a screenshot of you fast traveling through a city. Your mods could be causing issues too.

^Since "did you put points into reading" could be misinterpreted as a sarcastic remark, I feel the need to clarify that I think he meant putting points into the "Reader" skill during character gen. Just thought I should jump in before there's a possibility of this escalating into a fight over a misunderstanding.

Tho it would be an absolutely hillarious DF taunt . "Are you even Dabbling Critical Thinker? I bet you didn't put any point in Reader you gremlin"

Tho it's true you can't read whats on the slabs if you don't have points in Reader

I once had a gremlin who could read as an adventurer :P (it was one of the non-standard race choices, they must have somehow gained an established population it was hilarious)

I'm using Modified Masterwork, and thanks for all the tips. I've wondered what some of the text was on the fast travel screen, it's not always apparent what refers to what! I'll try to get a screenshot up shortly.

It's either a graphics problem, or you need to hit 'm' a couple of times to cycle through the different fast-travel map views. Note that it won't list anything if there's no buildings where you're standing, so stand in a town (it'll list 'house' or 'ruined house' even if there's no 'interesting' buildings around).
