Additionally, there should be a hotkey to show obscured engravings, lowercase to show while pressed and uppercase to toggle on and off.

Additionally, it should flash the quality level in light red if the mining designation is selected, so you don’t ruin your masterwork engravings.

I'd say no to title as only option. Many tile- and graphics sets, such as Obsidian, Phoebus/Spacefox, Biolinum, etc. focus on looking best with engravings hidden, while one can still just plain not engrave.

Should just be an init option, like autohiding engravings

I agree that hidden engravings look jarring. It's very hard to tell what is a wall and what isn't. With that being said, I don't think they should disappear altogether, perhaps there is some kind of middle-ground.
