Market in a ...fortress. Yes. Definitely a fortress.
« on: November 24, 2017, 12:48:04 pm »

I wanted to find a place with a nicely populated market, and the inhabitants of the hamlet Innshails informed me that their hamlet goes to Glovemenaced to trade. The sites menu informed me that Glovemenaced is a fortress, but I found that it wasn't any omega-sign-marked place on the map. Then, still poking around in the Quests map, I found it by accident. It was a fortress, yes. A dark fortress. Didn't know there could be markets there. Maybe Innshails is allied with the goblins? Maybe that's why they didn't seem too impressed when I told them about the goblin surgeon I killed?
Anyway, I have decided to travel to it anyway. I'm probably going to die on the way there. Ah well.

Yeah I've noticed that fortresses seem to have quite a few more of the functions of towns now. I'm guessing it's one of the changes of the new release.

Are dark fortresses safe to visit for their markets, or should I run the other way?

Honestly I've never visited a dark fortress even before the latest release (always struck me as essentially a suicide attempt to be honest), so I'm probably not the person to ask (I only really know they've changed through legends and overhearing conversations in adventure mode).

Goblin settlements can have inns and fortresses, but they only exist in abstract. The game isn't programmed to generate them, alas.

you have to go to a fortress to talk to the demon, so the fortress definitely exists.AT least since version 40.01,  all sites exist now.

That's not what I meant. The fortress is generated, but sans inns or markets.

Just in case you want to go looking for it (if only to prove it's not generated) dark fortresses are safer to visit than they used to be. You can pretend to be part of the goblin civ and they'll let you wander around (until you run into someone you know, then it's back to kill_neutral:required Fun).

Guards seem to be suffering bugs right now though, so no guarantee that this feature works yet...

The important question is, can we now visit dark fortresses without the game slowing to an unplayable crawl?

People will go to trade in kobold caves or dark fortresses.  All major settlements count as markets, irrespective of whether they actually have any commercial facilities at all or kill all strangers on sight.

I'd say yes. It's not been an issue for me for at least a year.

Huh, even in this new version, whenever I go to a dark fortress, the goblins start to scatter everywhere and it really slows the game down

Most major settlements will have a market built in them. Any market not belonging to, say, an active kobold cave, will have trade pass though it. I've even seen people trading at abandoned kobold caves.

That said, all of this happens abstractly and stops at worldgen. Markets that aren't in towns or forest retreats can't be visited.
