Nice! I do like those halls looking suspiciously like tentacles...

       The Concerns of the Deep

Spring of 672, following the collapse of Lovecrafted:
Report by BoI Agent Phel D'noso
Two subjects recovered from Lovecrafted, a child named Doren Earthencobras, and a miner named Logem Cattennebel.
Logem found suffering from dehydration and starvation. Severe lacerations and muscle tears seem indicative of extreme overexertion. Doren appeared to be in good health, overall.

Logem Cattennebel possessed erratic behavior, reporting to see specters, hear voices, and one evening, tried to dig her way out of her room through the cell wall.

Initial interviews with Logem were incoherent. Ghouls, ghosts, otherworldly beasts, she seemed to be throwing everything at the wall to see what stuck. Continued interviews and treatment yielded no immediate improvements.

After two weeks, Doctors Atmel and Toth reported the following, as they describe it, a moment of clarity:

"Lovecrafted is a cursed place, as the old prospectors already knew. Don't send anyone out there. Just forget it ever existed. There is nothing there, now. Nothing but corpses and half-finished mineshafts. The treasures scattered there can be carried off by whatever creatures dare to walk its halls, but not us. No more of us should go there. Only death waits for our kind there."

Logem threw herself from the highest window in Lividcaves not long after, a fresh hole dug through her cell wall, seemingly overnight.

Doren may yet forget the horrors he experienced in Lovecrafted. He is a brave boy, always putting on a pleasant face, but the tears at the corners of his eyes betray him.

Spring 677, or sometime later:
Final Report by Pho Ondelso

Six years ago, this fortress fell - succumbed to the vicissitudes of fate - and for six years, we kept our distance, kept an eye from afar. Yet now, I've been tasked to search these ghastly remains. I've been order to verify those rumors which are well-known to old prospectors and those travelling merchants which sleep sitting against the wall. Those who in their slumbering murmurs betray unutterable knowledge.

The deeper I travel into the embrace of these haunted corridors, the more I feel my sanity slipping. No, it is no mere slipping - it is being taken, consumed. There is something alive in the fabric of these walls. Something that has made the shadows lax and leaden, stretching out as grotesque fingers. I catch myself muttering to empty corners, where unseen eyes understand. I hear tantilizing riddles gnawing at the end of my consciousness, just beyond my very perceptions, tantalizing, ever out of reach. I lose track of time. We've been here 6 months, excavating, yet it feels like just a few weeks, yet also ten years. Each second a venomous serpent, wrapped around itself, suffocating all coherent reason!

And the notions! These fleeting, haunting imaginations. Echoes of distant ambitions! To build something great! To build something unfathomable in its lechery. To maim, carve, brutalize. To bathe in fresh blood. To sing dark hymns of truth and fear. All these ideas, not mine, rattle inside my head. In Lividcaves, the Bureau of Investigations sits behind the tallest carvings of Zon Glazefold. I conjure visions some days, digging through old papers, scratching at a cell wall, whispering truths to those who would listen, but going unheard, lost among the groaning stones. I feel I am here, pressed into the marble halls. The squirming something just beyond my reach and yet I fear to go any further.

And yet, still, I am here. Years later, called back to Lovecrafted. Far after its fall. Far after the investigation. With pick in hand, to dig deeper still, and free that which sleeps below.

To build something exquisite and unfathomable. To recreate the world in marble, and let nightmares wrought what they will under a black, starless sky.

OOC:

Whew! I tried to do some SCP stuff there at the start, but boy...somehow that's way harder for me to nail down. Partially because I don't want to use case files and that sort of redacted nonsense.

Thank you everyone for the participation and patience! I'm so glad to have been back in 47.05, and glad that everyone was able to take a turn who did so (this year seemed to have a lot of bad timing, but in the end, a lot of people played!)

Happy Halloween all! My daughter just came back from trick-or-treating, ate about 35 candies, and passed out on the floor. It was a great time!

It just keeps going.

Speaking of!

See you next /scare/!

I find it darkly ironic that the random peasant dwarf I picked for my brief turn, fully intending to have her channel into magma and kill herself, ended up being one of the last survivors of this doomed fortress.

Was fun to read along! Again, sorry I couldn't take a turn, though my dumbass can't seem to resist taking shit in a more serious and semi-competently managed (in-universe) direction so it was probably for the best, lol.

great writeups Del and everyone. This one was terribly managed, I mean I know for my own turn I managed to generate a ridiculous excess of all kinds of goods, I blame my

all I can say is, your serious and semi-competently managed-ness would have been dearly appreciated.

community fortresses are like, social experiences, where the stark contrast in playing styles becomes dearly evident in the most minute of details. its like trading around an accountants excel spreadsheet for fun but the last guy was drunk and so are you
