What's the difference?

Display cases need a glass window.
Only dorfs get display cases, other races have to make do with pedestals.

Other than that, doesn't seem to be much difference. Haven't Scienced it yet though. Don't often bother with a glass industry.

Humans don't have them anyway. At least, not in their raws. Maybe the reactions are ignored and all display furniture just gets given to everyone?

Wait, I just went back and checked and the thing I got from elves actually is a pedestal, but it's still described as being grown.

I don't think I've ever heard of a grown diamond before, or display cases being made of anything besides wood and windows. You should cross-post that to either the New Release !!SCIENCE!! thread or as a bug report.

The "grown" adjective indicates that all the wooden parts/decorations are "elf-kosher" (i.e. harvested in a tree-friendly manner).

I'm not sure there's any lopping off involved at all, as the tree may just drop the item when the growth is finished as they do with fruit (and I was under the impression the hippies are too lacy to carve the growths: instead they force the trees to grow them into the desired shape). However, I'm not convinced the trees have consented to the slavery of being forced to grow things for the hippies rather than grow substances that benefits themselves.
As a tangent: don't stand under a chest growing hippie tree when the chests mature...
