Is garnierite and nickel actually good for anything in the game?
Apart from using up your brass-industry zinc to make nickel silver, I mean

Nickel is the cheapest magma safe metal.

I smelt some garnierite, make nickel minecarts, and pump magma.
Magma furnaces in the upper levels of my fort, and drop magma in the single column of stairs that my invaders use.
Better than magma railgun, gravity does all the work.

Use buy iron/steel for weapon and armor, and nickel for magma safe tools and furniture.

I like making zinc large pot and barrels because they are so light and have a nice color to them. They are the second lightest metal next to aluminum.

Garnierite/Nickel has more use in the real-life "future technologies" associated with metallurgy. In DF, it is like cinnabar and some others, it is colorful and a mental reminder of RL applications.

Nickel minecarts, Nickel wheel barrows, Nickel pipe section is pretty much what I use them.

Can't make them as mechanisms or corkscrews, unfortunately.

I wish we could use it to make a nickel steel alloy that was better for armor and hammers/maces, but not so good for edged weapons. Theres a nuckel steel alloy thats much toughter than normal steel and not as normally brittle as typical ferrous/carbon steels
