Giant with necromancer slab
« on: December 12, 2017, 12:30:36 am »

I have an uninvited giant showing up at my front gate.

I was about to kill it, but then I realized that:
1) It has no weapons. In fact, it doesn't have anything except
2) It's carrying a necromancer slab.

Should I try to kill the giant, or should I cage it and lock it away where the evils of necromancy will never be seen?

(I'm probably not ready to exploit the secrets of life and death yet... unless you have a really easy way to do that without any corpses except 500 pond turtle shells. And one hamster corpse.)

Take it on as a citizen if its friendly. And teach it to read.

Otherwise get the slab and lock it up tight as a doomsday device. Every fort needs one.

Whatever you do with it, make sure it is unable to leave. Wall it in or lock it in, so it can't exit the map on its own like some visitors will do.

I'm not sure the slab is usable in fort mode.  Can dwarves read it?  I was under the impression that they'd only read books.

Actually, since we're on the subject, if you do get a book that contains the secrets of life and death, will dwarves become necromancers if they read it?  And can they make a book from a slab?

to all of your questions, yes. the slab does need to be in book form, but the dwarves can copy it into a book I believe

It wasn't friendly and was just hovering around the very edge of the map. I obviously couldn't keep it in so it's dead now.
(To a 1v1 with an axedwarf that was somehow using a copper axe.)

If I build the slab will dwarves be unable to read it?
And is there any way I can bury the corpse of the giant?

You cannot bury sapient creatures other than citizens (not sure about residents, and there are questions about "official" own civ members such as caravan members and the trade liaison), so the giant will just waste space in the corpse stockpile unless you dispose of it through atom smashing or magma incineration.
