Would it be possible to create one sprite for several objects/creatures occupying the same location?
for example:
A dwarf sitting on a chair
A dwarf holding a baby
A siege engine armed with ammunition
A cage containing an animal

And what about the state of a creature/object in a tile?
for example:
A seperate sprite for a door that is open/closed/locked/pet-locked?
A seperate sprite for a goblin kidnapper with or without a kidnapped victim?
A specific sprite for a dwarf who is currently drinking
A specific sprite for a dwarf who is currently eating
A specific sprite for a miner who is currently actively mining
etc

Just wondering how far the options go, here.

None of those are possible.

Except the "A siege engine armed with ammunition" and "A cage containing an animal", both of which are already in the game.
