I'm more inclined towards little bedroom nodes than full, sprawling complexes.
code:

.........
..##+##..
.##.#.##.
.#..#..#.
.+#####+.
.#..#..#.
.##.#.##.
..##+##..
.........

Noble rooms are just whatever comes to mind. Like this one.

code:

.....######
...###########
..###........##
..##.......##########
.##..8...#####.....########
.##....####........##.....##
###....####.....#####.....##
##....######....#..#.....######
##....#####.....#..+..........#
##.....#...........#..........####
##.....+......###..####..##.....+
####...#.....#+#+#....#####.....+
.##############.############...##
####...#.....#+#+#....#####.....+
##.....+......###..####..##.....+
##.....#...........#..........####
##....#####.....#..+..........#
##....######....#..#.....######
###....####.....#####.....##
.##....####........##.....##
.##..8...#####.....########
..##.......##########
..###........##
...###########
.....######

I have spacecraft on my mind a lot.

None of that is terrible outdated, I can do any design in there and I have no idea what you're talking about when you say 'advent of diagonal moving'.

Speaking of diagonal moving, I made this design with a fort that was dug into a cube from the top of a flat plateau kind of area; I dug a chasm around it as well;  I made the fort with completely optimizing dwarf movement in mind, in order to have a large pop with low framerate.  Once I'd hit about 140 dwarves I was getting about 20-30fps, which I'm pretty sure is pretty good.  Of course all of the puppies were in cages, etc.

The fortress was about 60x60 squares in height/width, with a chasm dug around it;  a bridge on each of the four sides with 4-wide floodgated gates;  stairs in line with the entrances all the way across.  I made some skybridges to the area outside of the main fortress area every 3 levels, within the chasm.  It was fun to design,  and I might use that model once the army arc kicks in and efficiency is more important for fielding larger armies.  For now on my current fortress I'm focusing on defending against ambushes, and my current location's terrain isn't very suitable for the design I used on this one anyway.

This image is of one of the 4 quarters of the floor with the bedrooms.  I'dve been able to fit all 190 of the non-noble dwarves in there, but version 38 came along and I'm itching to get ready for the army arc more than to play that fortress out.

Anyway, here's the image:

Actually, squeegy, a lot of the designs on that old thread are useless. One of the designs on the first page relies on rooms being separated by diagonal walls. This raises the problem with these diagonal walls being completely passable now, and so it renders the design useless. Some of the designs on the old thread are of some use, but for the most part its simpler to just have a fresh thread that is entirely free of any out of date 2d information or problems.

I actually quite like Kagus' design. It isn't very efficient but I do like the look of it  :)

Incredibly space in-efficient, but it keeps the dwarves happy. After the first few migrants I stop repeating the pattern and line all the walls the tiny apartments in the second CODE box.
No matter which type of room, each room gets (At least) a bed, a coffer and a cabinent. Everything also matches colorwise (Yay mods).

This is what I use in Tourtomes, 10 dwarves per level, 5 levels, 50 dwarves per tower.. Since I have less than 150 dwarves, this allows me to stuff all my dwarves into the three Housing towers I have. These towers menace with green glass spikes.

On the wiki, I ended up using the living pod lobbies on every floor.  Not very efficient, but the reason I ended up using them was because there is a waterfall falling down every floor to the bottom floor through all the lobbies, so the dwarves get clean + happy when they walk to and from their quarters.

I think it's just happy.  Dwarves don't seem to get clean, they just add a layer of water on top of everything else.

Didn't someone do some tests on this?  I swore it makes them clean too.

I know there was a "Dwarf wash-o-matic" made a while back, but I think all that accomplished was safely training the swimming skill.  I might be wrong though, it's happened a couple times before.

Still, it's just fun to think of Dwarves as creatures so inherently grimy that they do not get clean by washing, but merely add a coating of water that sticks to everything else.

I prefer this slight variation of the wiki :
code:

░░░░░░░░░░
░B.░.B░.B░
░..░..░..░
░░░+░░+░░░
░..░XX░..░
░B.░XX░.B░
░░░+░░+░░░
░B.░..░.B░
░..░.B░..░
░░░░░░░░░░

It has a worse ratio (8 dwarves on 100 tiles, compared to 4/49 = 0.0816), but rooms are one tile bigger, it uses 1 door for 2 dwarves, and I prefer large stairs.

Interesting.

Anyone have any good fractal designs to post?
Bedrooms are great and so are entire fortresses!

My layout in general:

First layers of sand and silt: farmning and storage and work shops.
Rock layers: living quaters and magma forges, if any lava.

They get clean. The water covering disappears after a few minutes.

EDIT: Also, if you design the system such that no water remains in the place where dwarves pass through the waterfall (read: line it with grates), they don't even get water coverings, but rather, water splashes or something like that which disappear in seconds.

They still get clean so long as they touch water though.
