Interesting. I'll have to try that on a fortress.

4 stylish 6 room appartments with dining room, office, bedroom, statue garden, booze stockpile and storage room. Alcoves serve as extra engraving spots. Hand this to a trantumer for a few day's and he'll be as good as dwarvenly possible.

I've been on a circle kick recently, so I've used something similar to the following honeycomb design.

The top left is what you get if you feel like digging out a lot of rock and building walls out of blocks to get a nice circular pattern.  The bottom left just dug out the rooms and smoothed walls.  Easier, and you can engrave it all, but you lose the nice circle effect.  The top right is the network to connect the multiple colums at the top (or middle/bottom as well, if you think it appropriate).  I extend this pattern downward (or upward) as far as I need/can.  And of course you can have as many or as few cylinders of rooms as you want.  I think last time I just went with three, but made them deeper.

I go for less economical 5x6 rooms.  Each dwarf gets a table and chair, a bed, a cabinet, a chest, and once I've smoothed the corners of the room, 2 statues.

I like pimping my dwarves rooms.

These are my design, I think they count as fractal.
Apartment 1 - 49x49 172 dwarves
Apartment 2 - 73x73 316 dwarves

If you take out all the outer one and only keep the room connected to the inner circle of road, you can get a 25x25 apartment hold 44 dwarves.

Btw, the red dot in the first image is just to show how big a square is.  The blue ones are where you put the stairs.  All rooms are 3x1 (after you added the door near the mouth.
I like this design because it's also versatile.  You can remove that center series of rooms (the 8 room in the center to make a cheap barrack after your economy start, or you can convert it to a dining room.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

I like this design i made, i haven't actually used it yet though but it seems very compact plus no overlapping of rooms plus each 4 tile (excluding entrance) room has many walltiles plus great efficienty to wherever dwarfs need to go or whatever dwarfs need and i like the look of it (also the center wich can either be a big garbage dump or well or noble room or whatever fits you).

I'm always scared to give my dwarves nice rooms because when the economy comes, they all get evicted and end up sleeping on the ground and I have all these fancy rooms going to waste.

I don't remember who I stole this from.  I usually put cabinets and chests in the other two blank spots.  These stack vertically, so maybe I'll have 4x8x4 bedrooms in a block

It's the THLawrence design from the wiki.  I use it myself, expanded out to 3x3.

Just had an idea, can't be bothered to try it.  Anyone know if this works?

I'm not sure if dwarves can use a bedroom that can only be reached by walking through another bedroom, or what effect it has on the inbetween guy.  I'm sure it works fine and no dwarf thinks twice about it.  Though I'm not sure what to do about the staircase...

Mostly I use 2x2 rooms like this.
Code: [Select]

║+++║π+║π+║π+║π+║π+║π+║
╝+++╚═┼╩═┼╩═┼╩═┼╩═┼╩═┼╣
>+++++++++++++++++++++║
>+++++++++++++++++++++║
>+++++++++++++++++++++║
╗+++╔═┼╦═┼╦═┼╦═┼╦═┼╦═┼╣
║+++║π+║π+║π+║π+║π+║π+║
║+++║ÆΘ║ÆΘ║ÆΘ║ÆΘ║ÆΘ║ÆΘ║
I put a bed, cabinet, and chest in each room and call it a day.

I decided to be bit more "grand" in my latest fortress, and most of the hallways are 5 across and the personal rooms are the same size as the workshop rooms: 3x3.

In my current fortress, I'm going the route of the insane: I'm giving each dwarf his own individual job profession (so I can find them in Dwarf Foreman) and I'm giving dwarves custom names following the matrillineal line so I can track relationships.

IE, if Urist McDwarf is the father, Urista McDwarfa is the mother, and Uriston McDwarf is their son, I'd give Urist the custom nickname Urist Uristahusband, and Uriston would get the custom nickname Uriston Uristason.

This is because I tend to give relations connected, house-like rooms.

I always like to engrave every wall of my dwarves' bedrooms, so I leave a two-tile thick gap between all the walls. I just created this fractal bedroom plan while playing around in MS Paint. Each iteration is four copies of the last one, with each copy missing a corner, from which the stump connects to the center. The number of rooms you get with this fractal on the nth iteration is 4*3^n - the fifth iteration gives over 300 identical 2x3 rooms. The self-similar aspect ends up wasting a bit of space, but you can fill that in if you actually use this design...which I know I won't.
