In any case, Dwarves already use Machuatl swords so keeping fantasy cultures in perfect step with real ones doesn't seem to be all that important to the game's overall theme.

Stone swords come before metal ones obviously, since using stone is a prerequisite to use metal. 

Metal swords actually came first in the real world. (unless you were being sarcastic here, which is quite possible).

So, the interesting thing would have to be that true stone swords could be back-engineered by people lacking metal after coming into contact with e.g. a bronze or copper using civilization.
