It might be possible with a strange mood (which is random), but as far as I know you can only encrust furniture made out of other materials with gems.

That said, you can make glass furniture, at least of some types.

The only non mood gem based "furniture" I know of is gem windows (and I've never made any of those).

Gem windows are possible.

But given the natural size of a gem and the size of a, say, door, probably you'll need a ton of gems to get a single one.

Also, ¿maybe mods?

Mods would indeed allow it.

You can set up a simple set of custom reactions that turn rough/cut gems (or most other things) into furniture or pretty much any other item really.

[REAGENT:A:1:ROUGH:NO_SUBTYPE:NONE:NONE]

[SKILL:MASONRY]

Assuming I'm not so rusty I've borked it up, that reaction should take an uncut gem or glass chunk and make a chair from it, and it's pretty easy to make more reactions for other items.

Actual gem furniture can only be produced as the result of a strange mood - otherwise, the best you can get is the occasional gem craft (figurine, ring, earring, amulet, bracelet, crown, scepter, or large gem) while cutting gems (which usually just gives you small cut gems good for encrusting).

I tried that once, made a reaction that made blocks out of creature corpses. For some reason it defaulted to using the brain of any whole body fed into it, so I wound up with a pile of yak brain blocks and a handful of other blocks made from severed bodyparts.  :P

Because moods are the only natural way to get there, and I often choose a dwarf's profession based on their preferences, I pretty regularly train up someone who "likes beds" (or whichever furniture item) in gem-cutting professions and hope for a mood. This is especially true if I already have someone who "likes beds" and is the fort carpenter responsible for bedroom outfitting.

Technically you can I think. As turning a specific type of gem into glass, and making it out of that glass.

Crystal glass uses rock crystal so it’s kinda gem furniture.
