I have checked both this site and Discord and couldnt find any info on this, nor do I remember if any video clarified or mentioned this... but;

Will player-made campsites (adventure mode) be finished prior to the release of adventure mode, or is that another update afterwards?

This feature was one of my favorites, its going to stink having to wait longer than 2 years for it so I can return to how I enjoy playing DF lol.

Could Dwarf Fortress in the future allow for a 3D world map? Think Underdark - a giant system of caves and tunnels, possibly without any surface.

@Vanzetti One planned map rewrite is to divide the map into cube chunks, instead of the rectangular prism chunks spanning the entire map height we got now. From my understanding it is mostly a matter of improving performance, but it could also allow for more interesting vertical maps.

As well as deeper/taller maps, both up and downwards, but so it can be overall bigger and more complex without you having to load and simulate all that at once. And yeah, supposedly there is the possibility of designing worlds that fit that description and parameters like lots of or no caverns.

I'm personally hoping for something like caverns not being (or optionally not being) a global setting of x number of caverns everywhere, and instead generating a variable number of overlapping or non-overlapping caverns, not linked to the world above. So one side of a mountain range you might have 3 caverns, and the other end might have 1 and a different section might have 5, with (some) intersectional regions in between, because that surface-world geography/biome doesn't (completely) control the underground geography and biomes, which also vary regionally and globally. That would be truly neat. Complex as hell, but neat.

Embarking in the caverns is something I've definitely heard suggested in the past. Maybe you can just ignore the surface and stay down there forever.

It's actually square chunks right now, they just happen to be generated in columns.

How much has Putnam's help sped up the work towards Myth and Magic? Is there still going to be a Long Wait?

@Flying Teasets : I fear that the Long Wait is not even in sight, and that you will have a first long wait (that DF Steam edition is at the same level as DF before Steam), then a second (Army arc and "several" things before), before the third, which will be the real one.

There have been multiple overtures towards there never being a Long Wait again, and there's really no intention on going back on that at the moment.

What does "no long wait" mean? Was thinking it would be kind of like now– there'd eventually be Myth and Magic beta builds on Steam while we get other features and bug fixes on the main line.

Or maybe it won't take too long to get a fantasy slider implemented for world generation once Myth and Magic work starts, and over time more-and-more things will be effected by the slider(s).

"No Long Wait" means that Myth&Magic was meant to be one of those arcs where no new Dwarf Fortress version would be released in several years. This time, between the last pre-Myth&Magic release and the first Myth&Magic release, came to be preemtively called "the Long Wait".

However, this plan for the Long Wait was all before Premium stuff, teaming up with KitFox, beta branches etc.. Said changes to how Dwarf Fortress development works has made year-log gaps between updates less tenable. Plus there were some rewrites the Brothers Adams figured would have to be done together and break saves, many months with no updates by necessity, but since they've thought up ways to break them up piecemeal. Thus the Long Wait is not getting done anymore.

As far as I understand it, better version control means that the game can continue to see smaller updates getting pushed while big rewrites get done.

Are there any plans to add legacy controls to the game for those who were used to 47.05 and previous controls? I noticed a lot of the base structures aside from alerts were still there and was hoping that I could interact with all the new content in the old way!

Everything I've heard says that we're never going back to the old UI. I wonder if there's a community pack to at least restore as many of the old keybinds as possible.

As previously mentioned: this is equivalent to "are there plans to to make every single UI in the game twice and maintain both UIs into the future indefinitely?", to which the answer is "no". Certainly adding more keyboard support is planned.

1. Currently the mysterious dungeons that are on the beta branch are only inhabited by goblins and a leader, is that subject to change? Are there going to be multiple different creatures that can appear in the dungeons once the update is finished?

2. At the moment all the dungeons and primordial remnants in a world are associated with the same single Sphere, is this going to be changed? Some variety here would be nice.

3. Right now magical items only allow the user to use interactions, are there going to be magic items that apply syndromes/passive effects to their user in this update? Since a lot of the magical items in fantasy/other roguelikes rely more on passive effects than activated abilities. boots of speed, gauntlets of strength, ring of protection, etc.
