Since climbing you need a more-than-1z tall wall around above-ground pastures. If they figure out there are animals over there they'll climb over 1z wall to get at em.

I usually do 3-high with an overhang.

If you have access to water I like to create farmland with a bucket brigade inside.

You can also do a 1z wall then channel a 2z or deeper dry moat around it if you don't want to deal with the slow process of scaffolding and building a 3z wall.

I've tried experimenting with animal lures - chained animals near map edges with pressure plates surrounding them. The plates are triggered to a support beneath the animal with the area below dug out so the invaders should fall below into some fun.
