"Dwarf fortress.exe is not valid win32 application"
« on: March 19, 2018, 10:12:47 am »

Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

This warning appears when I start the game.

I play the game on my desktop computer and it works fine, but when I transfer it to my laptop, it doesn't work. I download a new copy on my laptop, and it doesn't work.

Download the SDL version in the laptop.
I have the same problem with winxp when i use the basic download.

Move only the save and init folders.

The default Dwarf Fortress download is 64-bit, which Windows XP cannot run. Under "All versions" you can select a 32-bit build which should work.

I believe that 64bit version of WinXP would've run it without problems and 32bit version of Win7 would've have had trouble as well. This is less of a OS issue and more of a choosing the right version of the game issue.

It turns out my desktop is 64 and my laptop is 32!

Can I transfer a 64 save to a 32 exe? I have to try it tomorrow morning.

The DF save game format is compatible between all version of the same DF release (i.e. 32/64 bits and OS version). You still have the problem that a 32 bit Windows DF can use only 2 GB of memory, and so will crash with sufficiently large saves.
So, yes, the saves are compatible, but the inherent 32 bit limit of 2 GB will cause some (but not most) to crash when running out of addressable memory.

That's good. My world and fortress is very small.
