Jee wilikers, I think Highmax is near invulnerable, must have been dunked in the river styx like achilles was.
Just make sure he wears a boot.

The same way as with all "born adult" creatures: using measures to ensure you can handle units reverting to wild. It also results in the offspring being impregnated more or less immediately after birth if the father or opposite gendered offspring is present, so even if you cart off the offspring to a cage immediately, there's a high probability the female(s) will give birth while caged.
Note that you manually have to assign the offspring to the cage or dorfs will take them out.

Do I need a nest box or are they born like dogs/cats are?

They're live birthers, so no nest box is needed (egg layers cannot give birth while caged, by the way).

I know I'm quite late to the party, but I played around with GCS quite a bit and found it useful to give them a Child tag in the raws as well as making them egg laying.

The former is useful, because otherwise they can't ( to my knowledge ) be fully tamed, if they did not start as children.
The latter was more for fun, as I thought spiders should lay ( a few ) eggs.

Getting them to actually spout Silk was a whole other matter though. They all were friendly towards pretty much anything besides soldiers form other species.
So I captured a hippie and a human soldier and made them targets ^^

Spider egg contents can also be edited and altered as to make them typically inedible just for reference or suitably disgusting as you like, filling them full of ichor like yolk for instance then having dwarves make a special kind of product out of it like a exotic wine or glass vial concoction if not desirable to be eaten directly.
