Questions regarding Ice
« on: March 21, 2018, 12:42:22 pm »

So I started in an area with a natrual waterfall but it freezes over in the winter. I want to use this to build a meeting hall that has the waterfall flow through it, but I don't know how dangerous that will be.

My questions are:

- how deep does water have to be to turn into ice
- if the water flows through a grate, does it destroy the grate when it turns to ice
- does mist turn into ice

May ask more questions

1: If it exists, it can freeze. 1/7 just becomes an ice floor. 2/7 becomes an ice wall. Information provided by the wiki.
2: I don't believe so (not 100% sure), but a grate that is only supported by ice will break when it thaws. Should be able to redirect water flow to a subterranean tile with a grate to avoid any risk of it happening.
3: Mist does NOT freeze.

According to the Wiki, the minimum depth for a ice wall to be formed is 4. Grates are deconstructed upon freezing.

edit: source: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Water#Depth, see the table.

Do ice floors kill dwarves?

Also, can water create mist flowing through a grate into another grate into its actual basin?

Ice is dangerous. It kills everything caught in it, instantly, without warning.

If it is just an "ice floor", it will not kill the dwarf, but if it doesn't melt, that indicates the tile is cold enough to freeze, meaning that if water spills there, then it may freeze and insta-kill.

I don't know about the mist.

And even 1 depth water on ice floor turns into ice wall, which is lethal.

Ok, let me clarify this

I have a waterfall that flows into a delta. It freezes over in the winter.

I want it so water flows into a meeting hall where the waterfall starts, where it falls into a grate, hits the floor making mist and then flows out into another grate one space away.

So like this:

Waterfall
~~~~~
           #__  <------ Grate
           |_#__ <------ exit grate
             \%%%% <----- delta below
Can this worlk or will I freeze the dwarves inside?
The easy answer to your question is to build it and keep the dwarves out for the first freeze, to see exactly how the ice forms. It should be completely consistent.
Your chance of it working will go up if you restrict foot traffic on the grate square. But be prepared to lose that grate each year as the ice freezes on top of it.
Or you could do it without a grate, and put a wall of windows around the waterfall. That would guarantee safety, IMHO.
If the answers to your question are unclear, it's probably because the game has changed. In the current version, water falls in a nice neat column that only generates mist in adjacent tiles. In previous versions, those adjacent tiles would get wet, making a muddy mess around waterfalls. So it was an easy mistake, for example, to put legendary engravings in your dining room, and then build the waterfall for decor. The waterfall would make the adjacent tiles muddy, the mud would grow fungus, the engravings would be destroyed, and the engraver would throw a tantrum.
Does it generate mist if it doesn't hit something there? And wouldn't windows stop the mist?
You could of course make it so that the water falls straight down, so none of it overflows and touches the dwarves, but the mist can still spread.
Awesome. Thanks! I'll do it next freeze-over
