I have an awesome fort, volcano and an absurd amount of hematite, was wondering if the save will be compatible with the new version.

I use the LNP and am waiting for it to be updated.

Barring an unforeseen, self destructing, save corruption causing megabug which needs to be nuked violently, all updates will be save compatible (you won't get most of the new stuff of course and will still need an up to date keybindings file (or new options will show as "?").

Next save breaking update will be mythgen and that's coming after the Big Wait, which isn't due to start for another 6 months, so you have quite a while (years?) to enjoy your fortress yet.

I'm waiting for the LNP, too. Between Meph's tileset, Therapist, DFHack, and TWBT, I can't figure out how to update the version on my current fortress.
