Seriously, screw those magic shields. At least with this we can deal with em better if this goes well. Also I have a bad feeling about hidra

Mondragon Collective Research into Unconscious Blindsight-like Phenomena and the Hightened InDuced ReAction State (Project HIDRA)

We have magic. With magic, we can actually alter the way a mind and body, and well, much of the physical world function to an extent. One way in which we can enhance our troop's capabilities is an induced and massively augmented Blindsight-analogue mode of operation. Basically, cutting off their consciousness from their body so as to speed up the brain's function - as consciousness actually hinders reaction speed and capability in combat situations in general, and the subconscious is capable of complex planning, execution, etc. Our experimental finding that conscious intention to act appears only after a delay of about 350 ms from the onset of specific cerebral activity that precedes a voluntary act provided indirect evidence for the theory. In a direct experimental test a signal (stimulus to somatosensory thalamus) was correctly detected in a forced-choice test even when the stimulus duration was too short to produce any awareness of the signal; to go from correct detection with no awareness to detection with awareness required an additional 400 ms of the repetitive identical neural volleys ascending to sensory cortex. This brings kind of processing takes 750 ms just to produce thought that would go into doing something relatively mundane, while you can also, once that's executed, get down to 150-200 ms to actually do something about it if you have to consciously repeat the action and it's already a reflex. That's a full second and then some to register gunshots and then to react to them appropriately, or a little less given unconscious reflexes kicking in, and one our agents have proven to be lethal. Meanwhile the unconscious mind is limited to a much shorter interval, on the order of 20 ms to fully process said information, then deliver and execute actions based on it.

The unconscious mind is also capable of forming and executing complex strategies in the same time, and assuming cognitive control of the body to the most obscure information we don't even consciously observe - such as a minor movement to the right side of an escort car, for example. Given such a spell, our agents could induce such a state in themselves while on a mission, and they'd merely be cut off from conscious decision making and memory temporarily - as if they were on standby, or sleeping for the duration of the mission. They would then receive informational cues and memory upon re-entering an aware state. That is to say, they would then "wake up" to find they remember what happened while they were in a HIDRA state, and would have no recollection of the standby state. Therefore it would just seem to them that their senses were enhanced, and they could even retroactively explain why they did something as they would have access to the exact logic governing their actions.

Mondragon Design Phase:

Thaumoptics: (Difficult) [2+3-1=4] [3+4-1=6]
Unsure of where exactly to start with "specially treated glass," the science team chucked a number of ideas around. Things like infusing unformed magic into the glass during forging, using so called "magical" items like silver, gold, ivory, even blood, in the forging of the glass, magical engraving, (because that went so well last time). One enterprising intern suggested this: a spell, applied to the glass while forging, that causes magical emissions that pass through the glass to glow faintly to human sight, using the energy found in those emissions. After a hastily written spell formula was devised, the first prototype lenses were made, and tested. One of the scientists, while wearing said glasses, reported that, "Diego glowed gold... like a minature star's light... I could see his veins carrying the energy."
To contrast, it was reported that the scientist visited Tim in intensive care, and found that his energy was a darker gold bordering on red, and leaked out of his body through the bandaged wounds.
Using a more accurate version of the spell on higher quality lensing material may allow for some drastic leaps in our understanding of how magic functions. These glasses aren't much use in deconstructing the format of a spell, but what they do allow is rudimentary perception of the waves cast off by magic. If a spell was a rock thrown in a pond, these glasses allow viewing the ripples made by said rock. It's useful for detecting active spell effects as well as people over fairly short ranges. The ripples disperse fairly quickly, and faster from proportionally more energetic objects, such as level 6 thaumic potential agents, but the lenses shoud still allow for any people or spells to be readily visible, even through solid objects, to a range of about twenty five feet. Another important note is that the glasses are self powered, leading us to theorize that the magical ripples viewed through the lenses are actually leaking magic. Thaumoptic lenses: Allow perception of most active spells and people to a range of twenty five feet, more for more energetic spells/people. Four supply.

So we've got a Christmas entry on Discord, just need TTE to post it. In the meantime, I thought I'd propose this as a revision:

Thaumic Armour Piercing Explosive Rounds (TAPE / 'Overload' ammunition) | Project 'Red Tape'
While our operatives are equipped with decently potent close-to-medium quarters weaponry and an advanced piece of protection, they lack the ability to reliably break down enemy agent thaumic defenses in the form of planar or enveloping force fields with standard ammunition. Real world conditions require a method of bringing these shields down more reliably so that our technical advantages are more evident, and so that the usage of these shields is to the detriment of enemy agents in realistic conditions.

Project Red Tape seeks to, thus, to work off the experience we've gained from Runic circuitry and conduct research into the overload of bullets in contact with thaumic-emissive surfaces, whether through making the bullet's surface more receptive to overloading it's volume or otherwise just introducing a sub-critical amount of thaumic energy into the bullet's material during manufacture, such that, when in contact with a shield, it self-destructs, resulting in fragmentation, heat, pressure, light and noise as a side-effect. The energy density of the bullet would thus be increased and the ammunition would possess a higher total energy than what could be derived from it's muzzle velocity and purely kinetic effects.

While our standard ammunition has 1.3 kJ of energy at the muzzle, the goal of the project is to produce at least a TNT-equivalent energy density (4.162 kJ/gram) so that the subsequent detonation increases the 'effective caliber' of the round. What's more, the noise and light from the effect would disturb the caster, and increase the odds of the spell failing - with the pressure wave, possible fragments and follow-up rounds now able to make it through to the enemy unhindered. This type of ammunition would, in addition, scale with enemy thaumic potential, thus resulting in a more violent overload for a stronger shield.

To make it clear, the ammunition is based on the 7.62x28mm SOFIA cartridge and would come in two forms - mixed magazines, which'd be cheaper and have TAPE rounds mixed in much the same way as tracers, and dedicated TAPE magazines consisting only of TAPE tipped cartridges. The cartridge is marked by a deep blue primer and ribbon on the tip of the bullet, and a cyan tip.

I very much like the idea of anti-forcefield rounds based on our explosively defective attempt at runic circuitry. My only nitpick with the design is that it does not explicitly mention how we intend to prevent these rounds from exploding as a result of the thaumic radiation emitted by our own operatives (especially during spellcasting). Perhaps some form of shielding could be devised? We already have a means of transducing thaumic emissions, so this should be fairly easy.

As mentioned in the previous turn, the most exciting field of battle this year will be in the Arstotzkan capitol, with plenty of close-quarter fighting and siege warfare.  Arstotzka, accordingly, spent their design phase developing a high-altitude tactical bomber.

Well, the thaumic radiation would need to come into direct contact with the circuitry. so as long as we don't try to dragon gaze the rounds, we'll be fine.

I like the TAPE idea. Johiah has indicated they might be a bit pricy, so we might want to give ourselves the option of using them like tracers, in that only 1/4th of a clipazine is TAPE bullets.
Mind you, they might work best as SOFIA ammo, if they are as effective as hoped. An operative with Thaumoptic Lenses and TAPE could be in charge of identifying and taking out shields, with the rest using regular bullets.

So I've finally got around to posting the Letter to Santa I co-wrote with Nikola.

Quote from: Letter to Santa
Dear Santa,

My name is Mondragon and I’ve been a good boy this year. I’ve been very polite and well-mannered. For example, when I wanted something, I made eye contact and asked politely. If Thantro was annoying me, I used my words to get him to stop. I never let him drag me into acting bad in public. Thantro hasn’t been very polite, though. One time, Thantro and I had set up a playdate in a park, but he never showed up. While I was digging in the sandbox, I found one of his toys. I’d never change the time of an event and not let people know.

People keep jumping out of boxes and doing bad things. First it was a bully who broke my scientist action figure. Then when I was in a mall, people snuck in and almost trashed the place. I hope for Christmas something good can come out of a box.

Since we apparently also have to requisition something this turn (and it's our last turn doing so apparently we get two more), I would like to propose we get ourselves a nice sniper rifle to complement our armament.

In particular, the Zastava M91 looks nice. The gun's lightweight, pretty damn cheap, has the ability to change scopes without losing zero, comes with some nice night vision devices (optimally, the PN 5×80 - which automatically turns off around brighter light sources and back on in suitable light, has nice amplification and can spot people up to around 600 meters regardless of the conditions), and should be pretty adaptable for our needs. I could see us rechambering the thing to include a better round and getting it a silencer akin to what we have for the SCAFIR.
