B 4

You are Myrtle Jenkins, Just an old retired seamstress from the capital city of the empire.
Additional character info/history:

She goes by Old Granny Jenkins. She's in her late 80ies.
But that's just a ruse, she's really a masterful veteran assassin.
She is a bit on the elderly side, but still very capable of killing people.
She still has a sharp wit but often pretends to be senile when it suits her.
Among other assassins, she goes by the codename Silver Strand (It used to be Black Strand at one time, but that changed when her hair turned grey.).
Today, she's just going for her daily shopping round for groceries.

She's a world weary old woman who have literally been everywhere, due to her profession of course.
Never got married and no kids or grankids whatsoever. Her career always got in the way of that.
Despite all this, she never regretted her life decisions.

All the tools of her trade are cleverly hidden in various places of her home.
But she always carries her trusty hidden mini-crossbow at her wrist, and two very deadly knitting needles in her hair.

"Vegetables! Come get your vegetables! Fresh from the southern farmlands, you won't find better quality in all the capital!" A grocery vendor yells from his stand, one of the many voices chattering about the busy market street.

You approach the stand, examining the greens laid out in the various boxes and trays.
"Hey, Old Granny Jenkins! How've you been, ma'am?"
"Hello sonny. Oh you know, the same. Knitting sweaters and the like."
"Aw, that's sweet. I bet you're pretty good with those needles!"
You have a brief flashback of stabbing one of your victims to death with your needles.
"Well, I try." You smile sheepishly.
You soon pick up one of the cabbages, studying it. "How much are these cabbages?"
"For you ma'am, just two gold pieces each!"
You hand him some gold, picking out a few cabbages and putting them into your grocery bag.
"Thank you ma'am! And keep up the knitting, it's good to stay active!"
"Thank you sonny. I do get my exercise."

You continue along, looking around for anything else you need.

We were living here almost continuously for a year, so we know most vendors at least by name.

Strange, we didn't got any major mission for our time here, someone is planning something and want us here.

COMMUNISM!!
They sell the regular farmers market stuff like cabbages and carrots, and for those adventurous eaters they even have hallucinogenic mushrooms.

You have probably seen most of these people here before, but there is one who stands out.
That guard is is clearly in disguise, a poor one at that. You'd recognize him from miles away.
But you just play along, pretending he's just another town guard.

Looking around, you recognize many of the vendors. You've been living here almost continuously for a year now, so you know most of them by name.

There's Sonny, who sells mostly vegetables like cabbages and carrots.
The lady vendor on the right is Marlene, who also sells mostly farmers market stuff. You remember that she was publicly arrested some time ago as a suspected spy for some cult organization, but was later released. Since then, she's been back at the vendoring business.
The gentleman vendor ahead of Sonny is Curio, who sometimes sells some pretty exotic items. "Hallucinogenic mushrooms! Come get your hallucinogenic mushrooms! Freshly picked from the forests of the Feiterlands and prepared to perfection for the adventurous eater!" Curio yells from his stand, also waving around some political pamphlets.
The gentleman vendor ahead of Marlene is the blacksmith Artiras, who always has a healthy stock of weapons and armor for both citizens looking for arms as well as imperial soldiers wanting additional gear.

You have probably seen most of the other people here as well, but there is one who stands out. That guard is clearly in disguise, a poor one at that. You'd recognize him from miles away. But you just play along, pretending he's just another town guard.
You head towards Marlene's stand, taking a look at her goods. The woman nearby, Frea, with the child, soon greets you.

"Hello Granny Jenkins. Say hi to Granny Jenkins, Poh."
"Hi Granny Jenkins." The little boy says to you.
"Hi Frea, hello Poh. How are you today?"
"Mommy wouldn't let me go play, she said I have to come to the market with her." Poh blurts.
"Mommy just wants you to be safe." Frea says to Poh, and then turns to you. "You know how it is these days, with all the trouble that's been going on in the Empire lately. And now after that imperial expedition that went missing, the Empire is breathing down everybody's necks." She glances at the vendor Marlene, who gives an agreeable nod.
"These are trying times, indeed." You had heard about the setbacks the Empire has been having lately; it seems someone or something out there has been sabotaging them at every turn.
"It's hard enough being a single mother, and now with all the trouble in the Empire, maybe I should consider moving. Perhaps to Hammerstone, or West Bredmark."
Frea sighs. "Damn that irresponsible bum Sir Pent, he probably doesn't even know about his child here!"
You shrug. "Men. Can't count on them. That's partly why I never bothered raising a family." That and the whole being an assassin thing.
Frea pouts, shaking her head. "It's been four years since that knight-in-training came and left. I don't know what I'm still waiting for!" She sighs again.
"Oh, I'm sorry for taking so much of your time Granny Jenkins. We should get going. You take care now!"
   "You too, dearies."

As Frea and Poh leave, you briefly think about your year stay here at the capital. Strangely, you haven't gotten any major missions during this time. Seems someone is planning something and wants you here.

You soon get back to your shopping, observing Marlene's cart, which includes various fruits and grains, and a stray cobweb here and there.
"I'll just take these berries. And some rice as well." You sort out an appropriate portion of each, handing her some gold.
   "Sure thing. Thank you ma'am!"

You continue on your way, glancing at the guard again. Huh, is he asleep?...

   Wait... it doesn't look natural.
...Is he... dead!? But then that would mean...

   ...

You look closely at the apparently dead guard, making sure that he is indeed who you thought he was: the assassin by the codename Steel Shadow.
If Steel Shadow was killed in such a seasoned manner, that could only mean... there is a new player in town. Someone with the skills to assassinate an assassin so adeptly, who also knew about Steel Shadow's identity. Which means that they could know about yours as well...

You know for a fact that none of the people in the immediate area knows of your identity, nor could they be connected to any assassin groups.
Which means that the assassin is either hiding somewhere, or is far gone by now.

Just keep a low profile and walk down the street, while pretending everything is as it should be.
But stay alert with your hidden mini-crossbow ready.
And whatever happens, don't reveal your true self in public. Too many sheep (Code word for those whom aren't assassins, while wolves are code word for those whom are.) know you here.

A weasel randomly appears in our house tells us what our mission is.

It is different animal for each assassin, but for us, it's a weasel.
You always give it a treat when it arrives, it isn't necessary but you do not want anyone to go hungry, least of all any animals.
Oh, that reminds you. You need to buy something for when it arrives.. Better head towards the local butcher.

Whatever happens, you can't reveal your true self in public. Too many sheep (Code word for those whom aren't assassins, while wolves are code word for those whom are) know you here.

Meanwhile, you consider the assassin groups, and how someone could have gotten to Steel Shadow. Assassins' identities are hidden to nearly everyone; one of the only odd exceptions is an animal that shows up at the assassin's house with the assassin's next mission. Your animal is a weasel, and you always give it a treat when it arrives. It isn't necessary but you do not want anyone to go hungry, least of all any animals. Oh that reminds you, you need to buy something for when it arrives... better head towards the local butcher.

"Good doin' business with ye." Says Sal the butcher, solemn as always as he hands the last of the purchased pig's blood to the buyers, a pair of odd looking little fellows in robes.
"Hehe, likewise..." The robed acolytes grin excitedly as they feast their eyes on the gallons of red they just purchased, soon lugging the buckets away.

Sal then turns to you with a greeting.
"Old Granny Jenkins. What can I do ye for?"
"Hello Sal. I'd just like a small slab of meat, please."
   "Sure."

He bags a piece of lamb meat and hands it to you in exchange for some gold.

Meanwhile, a group of Imperial soldiers pass by, moving through the street and escorting several prisoners in their midst.

"Make way! Imperial officials coming through, with criminal suspects in tow! Stay your distance if you know what's good for you!" Shouts the soldier captain as he wads through the street with a trail of men following behind.

You glance at the prisoners... looks like a few men with mustaches, a younger fellow with purple hair, and an old man. Doesn't look like they are from the city.

With newcomers comes also the possibility of new wolves on the prowl. Assassins feigning as prisoners is not at all unheard of, though in such cases the assassins were mostly sent to assassinate other prisoners. Still, best to be on guard.

You watch the men closely as the escort continues down the street.

Sal mutters some slur under his breath to himself.
He never really liked non-humans, but usually keeps his discriminatory views low-key.

You clearly heard him, but doesn't indulge him on the matter however, you got other things to do.

This old man seems familiar, looking at him it's definitely one of "Stone Hounds", one of the more notorious private bodyguard companies in your world, and for a good reason, the odds of survival let alone success in a mission one of those is in your way are almost zero for everyone besides the best of assassins, he might recognise us too if we stare too much.

One of the prisoners with a mustache starts yelling about lizard people running the government and how they're putting him to death to keep him quiet and to bury the truth, apparently the truth is that the moon wizards want to shoot laser beams at the planet to make everyone sterile.

Sal mutters some slur under his breath to himself.
He never really liked non-humans, but usually keeps his discriminatory views low-key.

You clearly hear him, but don't indulge him on the matter however, as you've got other things to do.

Studying the prisoners, you notice that the old man seems familiar. Looking at him, it's definitely one of the "Stone Hounds", one of the more notorious private bodyguard companies in your world, and for good reason; the odds of survival let alone success on a mission when one of these guys is in your way are almost zero for anyone besides the best of assassins.

You recall the time when you first met him. You were about to finish a job, until this Stone Hound suddenly showed up to ruin your day. After a prolonged bout of martial combat with neither side taking an advantage, you were out of time, as the authorities were coming, and had to escape the scene. Though you were able to get away relatively unharmed, it was also one of the only assassinations you had ever failed. That was many years ago, but if you're still able to recognize him, it's a safe bet he'd be able to do the same.

The fact that he's here could imply that he's protecting a potential target, or it could just be a coincidence. In any case, you soon look away, as he might recognise you too if you stare too much.

"Ah, this place brings back memories. Last time I was here in the capital, the Seasnakes had just won the Grand Otter Cup. Beat the Urchins in the finals, I do believe. Time sure flies." The Stone Hound muses.

"Keep movin' old timer! You'll have plenty of time to reminisce when you're all locked up." Says one of the soldiers as he hurries the escort along.

"You guys got no right arresting us in the first place!" Yells one of the prisoners with a mustache. "I know what this is really about! I know about the government and how it's being run by lizard people!"

Some of the nearby citizens start to show a degree of concern as they begin chattering amongst themselves, glancing at the prisoner escort with worry.

Even Sal mutters something under his breath again. "I knew it. Goddamn lizardmen."

"You're probably all lizardmen yourselves!" The mustached prisoner continues, directing his accusations at his captors.
"Or just tools of your reptilian overlords to do their bidding! I know they're putting me to death to keep me quiet and bury the truth! Well the truth can never be hidden! The world will know of the moon wizards' plan to shoot laser beams at the planet to make everyone sterile! Just know that we're ready with our tin-foil underwear! Their plans will never succeed, and your lizard masters will regret the day they tried to supplant the true Empire!"

A wave of panic flares up in the nearby streets as concerned citizens seem to take to heart the rantings of the unruly prisoner, as they soon begin yelling questions of their own at the soldiers.

"Is it true that the lizardmen have taken over the government!?"
"That would explain all the strange happenings lately, with the arrests and the kidnappings and everything!"
"What does the Emperor have to say about this!? Is he a lizardman himself!??"
"Where can I get a pair of tin-foil underwear!?"

As the panic crescendoes, a shrill scream comes from the merchant street you just came from. "Aaahh!! T-this guard!!--h-he--he's dead!!!!"

Gasps come from the nearby citizens as they examine the seemingly sleeping, but evidently dead guard. Seems the sheep have discovered Steel Shadow's body.

"It was the lizardmen I tell you! They've got eyes and ears everywhere, and they're slowly but surely taking over the government! Run and save yourselves while you still can!" The mustached prisoner yells again.

"Gah, that's enough out of you!" The soldier captain growls, taking a piece of cloth and gagging the rebellious prisoner.
"I know you're on the Anti-Lock's payroll, and you're gonna tell us everything when we get to the cells!" He grabs the prisoner and briskly marches down the street towards the prison.

"Oh man, how did I get into this mess..." The purple haired prisoner sighs to himself as the soldiers continue to escort him and the other prisoners along.
