Losing my sense of smell
« on: April 03, 2018, 05:51:46 pm »

I know this might sound a bit weird, but I used to be quite proud of my sense of smell. I was able to tell all my friends apart with eyes closed just from their "personal smell" and to smell food, flowers or animals from quite the distance.

Nowadays I don't even perceive my friends' personal smells anymore, and most of the time I barely even smell anything at all. I pretty much feel like I only smell things if they're right under my nose (and even then, a lot of stuff I used to be able to smell don't smell like anything now). Are there ways to get it back to how it was before ?

Normally in humans, olfactory bulb neurogenesis persists all through adult life.

It might be that you have something affecting the rate of neurogenesis, and this is causing your issue?

I would suggest seeing a specialist doctor.

Do you smoke? Smoking is terrible for your sense of smell and taste.

I don't smoke, but I often hang out with friends who smoke a lot, so maybe second-hand smoking has negatively affected my sense of smell.
I'll try avoiding smokers for a moment to see if it gets better. Thanks for the advice :)

I don't think this justifies seeing a doctor just yet, but I'll do it if this persists for an extended period of time.

FWIW, I don't think that's your issue. I've been a smoker for years, had sinus surgery, lost my sense of smell and had it come back. You'd have to be mainlining cigarette smoke up your nostrils for years for it to wipe out your sense of smell.

You might just have a chronic sinus infection. More and more people are suffering upper respiratory illnesses and related ailments because of this recent cold, wet weather. It's a spawning pool for everything that infects us, so it's almost guaranteed one thing is going to get through. CBD was just approved for olympic athletes by the IOC and was recently recognized by the FDA.
Quote from: Notice in August 2017 from FDA Deputy Commissioner Anna K. Abram in regards to WHO re-evaluations of psychotropic substances
CBD has been shown to be beneficial in experimental models of several neurological disorders, including those of seizure and epilepsy.

It's a natural regenerative that your body synthesizes anyway in the endocannabinoid system in order to repair damage, as well as controlling a variety of high-level cognitive processes and needs.

I don't know if it will work, but I presume it will be more effective than spraying saline solution up your nose.
