this held my attention for just long enough to find a random post in a random thread which actually said what this even is, since apparently the makers of this game think that pointless obfustication is is a good way to get people to play, at which point I thought "why would anyone even care" and left

You're right; it isn't as good as any of the previous years. But it is a chance to glorify the mountainhomes and so I will lend my cheese.

I joined that godofblood***** which is betrayed anyway... what's the purpose of this? is there anything else than getting the max number of people without betrayal to it?

In brief, a circle is just a key-restricted list of names, and anyone with the key can either add their name to the list ("join") or lock the list ("betray"). Thus the game: to amass as large a list as possible by recruiting people trusted not to betray.
