Improved Mass-Dump Designation Interface
« on: April 23, 2018, 04:47:12 pm »

The current dump designation is a bit of a broad brush. You can't really be aware items you're selecting when you're trying to clean up an area. For instance, the blocks inside constructed walls are selected for dumping, as well as the good weapons hiding under those dead goblins.

An improvement would be to have the mass designation act as an item selector instead, giving you a list of selected items and allowing you to perform actions (dump/melt/forbid) on all or just some of those items.

Another feature would be to designate a specific dump zone to send the items to, rather than the closest. Or you could set the location to a one-time point, for when you just need to quickly move a precious sock out of the way of some magma.

being able to specify specific dumping zones when dumping would be an absolute godsend. I've never used more than one because of the restriction, but being able to choose "throw this into the magma, never to be seen again" Vs "throw this into the goblin holding arena" Vs "place this somewhere safe so I can examine it later" would be really nice and useful.

Perhaps allowing specific garbage dumps to be tagged, similar to how minecart routes are set up could help? Labeling one as "Magma" and one as "Arena" for instance.

My only question is how would we designate which dump to put the item in? We currently don't have a system in place for something like that in the current designations menu. Maybe under the work orders->refuse section, we could toggle which dump to go to?

Just a couple thoughts

Currently you can go through all your dump zones and disable all the ones you don't want active.  You can also use the stocks screen in conjunction with mass dumping to better specify what exactly you want dumped.

It would have to be a new type of menu. I was thinking sort of like the squad orders menu, in which you can select individual squad members and give them a move order using the cursor or a predefined point. Obviously, selecting items with "a,b,c,…" isn't practical, so you'd be using -/+ and enter to select, then the d/m/f/h keys to perform the relevant actions. Shift+enter would select everything. I guess ctrl+enter could invert selection.

There's a reason why the title says "Improved". You have to go through the hassle of locating and toggling your dump zones every time you want to dump something, and you can't handle two dump locations at the same time. The stocks screen can have several thousands of items.
