Down at the bottom of the ocean. Beneath tons of brine which would crush you down. Not into broken and splintered flesh, but into thin soup. Into just more of the sea water. Where things live that aren't so different from you, but you will never live to touch them and they will never live to touch you.

...a serpent with the feathers of a fowl, or at least that's what your master says it looks like. You're not sure what either of those things are, though you wonder as you taste the garden's air with your tongue.

Your master tells you his metal body needs no food, though he teaches you of the things in his garden for you to eat, and how to tend them. One day, as you check the progress of a butterfly's chrysalis, you notice your master walking through his plants more slowly than usual. The next day, he moves even slower. The day after, you notice grinding noises as he moves. One day, he takes you aside, grasping your hand. "Do you remember the tender bean plants of last year? Or the butterflies who gave birth to the ones you watch now?"

"Not very well, though I know that I saw them once. Were they not very much like the ones now?
...Should a serpent have a good memory? Am I not a very good serpent, who forgets?"

He sits down on the stone bench, regarding you with his kindly lights. "They were much like the ones here now will be when they emerge from their cocoons. But... do you know where they have gone? Or the spring grubs that we have cooked?"

"The grubs went into my belly! I guess that means they are me, now? And the others fell onto the soil and... got eaten by other things, maybe? I've never watched to see what happens. Maybe I should!"

"That is, in one sense, quite true. I am proud to see you understand this flow of the garden so well. I need you to understand, too, that in another sense, they are gone." With a scraping sound, he takes your other hand. "Do you understand?"
