Title. I have an idea for a project. Preferably not too complicated.

Ugh... Gimp is terrible for pixel art. Even MSPaint is superior in terms of actual pixel exactness and total usability.

There are actual programs used for making and animating sprites. I suggest looking for those.
One that has a free version available is Spriter. Never used it, but it looks like it would be very useful for making "jointed doll" type animations, as it does 2D bone animation. Doing it the old fashioned way with individually hand drawn frames will take you the rest of your natural lifetime to make a 20 minute animation, so I suggest using technology wherever you can.

The free version is missing some features, but meh, beggars arent choosers.

Aseprite is one of the best i've used, it's not free, but if you know how to compile a copy yourself you can use it for free anyways.

The good thing about ISGs is, you can revive them basically any time later. And hand drawing animations would probably make me spend my lifetime on the animations.

Excuse me, a 20 minute long pixel art animation? I'm pretty sure that would take you months and also be the first time anyone's made a pixel art animation that's that long
