Shazbot's goblin had time to train his climbing skill. This probably was one of the hidden factors.

It shouldn't matter. Smooth stone isn't available for climbing. You can try it with an adventurer, and I'm pretty sure it won't even show up as an option.

If the goblin was trapped in a gatehouse, I'd expect some other surfaces in there, like doors or risen bridges. Perhaps the gobbo used those? Are they climbable?
