That olde age music is still damn good, I listen to it sometimes too.  Today, Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked is what struck my fancy (Check them out on youtube if you dare).

Normally, the best music for DF in my opinion is a mix of classic game tunes like the Arcanum soundtrack, the Divine Divinity soundtrack and above all else the HOMM 2 soundtrack.  Warcraft 2 music is nice too.

Nothing beats the Lord of the Rings soundtrack (all three films, shuffled) for me. I actually developed a sort of Pavlovian reaction to it, if I hear that music I have an urge to turn on DF and press some arrow keys and a few "q"s.

I've never really liked heavy metal.  It just sounds like a bunch of guys repeatedly smashing their fists into the exact same place on a guitar, while trying to grunt impressively.

EDIT:  I suppose I should rephrase that.  There are a few artists that I quite enjoy (Ozzy most certainly being one of them) who supposedly fall into the heavy metal class.  I'm talking about the guys who think "lyrics" is a type of whiskey.  I'm not entirely sure what that genre is (those genres are) called, though.

Heavy metal contains more genres than you can shake ten sticks at, so I don't really think you can stereotype the sound of it that easily. And, as a guitarist, I can assure you that metal isn't just repeatedly whacking the guitar. Well, except for Through the Fire and Flames.

Ganndd: You remind me of one of my friends, he replaces everything he can with the PSO stuff. He even pseudo-hacked his copy of Phantasy Star Universe to replace alot of the PSU music with PSO music.

Every time we run Plains Overlord (a dragon boss) he comments on his 'old school' dragon music.  

He doesn't play DF but I assure you he would be doing he same thing you are if he did.  Makes sense though. That stuff wasn't bad.
