It's probably less about good development practices and more about kickstarting the unrestrained hype machine.

I've seen quite a few people excited for 76, for one reason or another. I've watched some gameplay and read reviews of it so far, and I'm considering buying it.

It's not perfect, and I'm not gonna pre-order or buy it at full price. I've played a lot of janky, broken, bad games and enjoyed them, so I think I'll enjoy this. It's no Fallout: New Vegas, butt it looks fun enough.

Matches my opinions quite nicely.

Unfortunately, due to trends in Bethesda's game production over the years all I can see in Fallout 76 is their newest genius idea to put as little work as possible into the next game. They make broken skeletons to be fixed and fleshed out by modders these days. I'll pay for a Bethesda game when they make something that stays good/interesting past the early learning/honeymoon period without mods.

FO3 was wonderful. Skyrim and FO4 both... kinda sucked.

76 sounds like such a bizarre idea that I kind of do want to play it. If I were to shell out the money for some sort of new gaming machine, though, there are probably plenty of other games I'd buy first.
I guess I could always buy a physical copy of it, have a go, then trade it in for something else...

It feels like a larger, emptier, buggier version of FO4, without any chance of coming across friendly traders or NPCs you can interact with. No breaks from the solitude except from the occasional robot who'll spout a line or two at you and give you a quest.

It's FO4's exploration, with survival elements and a bigger world to do it in. If you enjoyed that aspect and want to share it with friends, you'll probably enjoy 76. If you want storyline, awesome fights or the ability to mod the game and add new and interesting things to it, then it's not for you.

The level gating on loot is annoying as heck, too. Find a neat combat rifle lying around while you're poking through a little ruined township? Check in the inventory and it requires level 30. Annoying when you're level 13. I haven't seen a single set of power armour that's usable at low levels, and that includes the one with a few bits of a Raider set. Feels like a lot of the parts of FO4 I liked (gunplay with a well set up gun, wearing power armour and feeling godlike until I turned up the difficulty out of boredom) have been replaced, though you're so bullet spongy anyway that the armour isn't too necessary. I get the feeling that there's loot tiers? I've seen a sniper rifle with required level 10 and one with the same mods that did far more damage and required level 25. Might mean that delving into the high level areas is actually worse for you than sticking to level appropriate areas, as you can't actually use a lot of your hard earned loot.

The level gating
Haha, damn, you just neatly assassinated the game for me. :))
"Level gating" is a dumb feature in any game. Bugger that for a joke.

Spent a couple of hours on it today. It's... just... not good. If it were a $20 indie game, it might be forgivable. It's not entirely unplayable and there is SOME fun to be had there. But it's not a $60 game nor does the multiplayer really improve the game at all. Even when playing with friends it was an entirely bland experience. Wait for a sale if you're insisting on going for it.

The good parts are that it's still Fallout and now in a new map.

The bad parts are that you're missing about 3/4 of a typical Fallout game, the engine is buggy and unoptimized. The multiplayer is poorly thought out. And nothing really even looks as good as you'd expect given that most of it is a frankenstein of Fallout 4 assets. Fallout 4 looked better. At no point did I ever feel threatened either. Even when I decided to end it all with a self inflicted grenade, the grenade clipped through the ground and disappeared... twice. And the controls. God the controls are a mess.

Really, give it a pass, at least temporarily. Give it a month or two and see if they're willing to do anything to fix it. I won't say it's a doomed product. There's still something to love there. It just needs a LOT of work. More than the 2 weeks till full release will allow. Possibly more than they have incentive to do on their own, but if they're determined, they could make it a good game. It just isn't now.

^^ Yeah, i got around 10 hours in
if i wasnt playing with friends i wouldnt play it. It's pretty bad tbh. It's a very generic themepark MMO set in fallout minus human npcs characters (although i guess holotapes of human conversations are all over the place).
Putting aside all the bugs and the... insanity that is always on mics (or turn off all mics, which i choose.. because FOR SOME REASON YOU CANT EVEN TURN OFF YOUR OWN MIC WITHOUT TURNING OFF EVERYTHING INGAME, if you say want to talk to people via say, discord)
the quests are just... soo... generic... like.. insanely..... fetch questy and escorty missiony..... which stands out even more when a bunch of people are doing them at once.. run to console A, a bunch of poeple are using it in a line... then go to location X and kill 3 bear asses, come back.. UGH). There is some decent lore/fluff text that help disguise it sometimes, and the Voiceacting is decent even if its all robots and holotapes but... it cant stop me from noticing that everything is either go to a console, grab item from chest,  or kill X enemies (and/or collect body part A).
I think in the 10hrs i played only one quest felt slightly different, and it was a `event` quest which everyone nearby could participate in, it was ok but basically just a variant of a really weak world boss that spawns at a location sometimes, and has `ally helicopters` to help you fight it.
The world feels.. really artificial to me, the other real humans seem to make it feel more artificial then make it feel dynamic.

I don't hate it or anything, its bland but not like.. horrible or anything. i wouldnt recommend it to anyone at anywhere near its price though, and while i didn't have any multiplayer bugs, it still has normal bethesda on-release bugs as usual.

I'm surprised people are saying they felt it was too empty.  Too me it felt too cramped.  Played the first half of the time on Nov 1 just regular follow the quests style but once I hit about level 7-8 I went out exploring most of the southwestern quarter of the map looking for a place too build and there were so many no build places which was frustrating.  Also The blueprint system is pretty janky, and I had built in one area then logged for 20 minutes and came back with other people building on my spot so my camp didnt spawn...which kind of shows me moving your camp quite a few times is intentional and expected considering the value of real estate.

As to the no NPC nonsense, there was a Super Mutant trader wandering the roads, think his name was Gareth and his Brahmin Moo-Moo.  There's also robots in abundance.  I also imagine once they start doing expansion packs new areas will have survivors, you can tell that what they were going for was this whole "There were clearly survivors up until just recently, so what happened to them?" story.

Not sure if I like or hate the card perk system yet tbh.  Not much in the way of player agency and it looks like skills like Lockpicking are tied to them saddly, but it's understandable from a balance standpoint.

I played solo which was perfectly doable, since it seems it shares a tagging system similar to modern MMO's where just as long as you hit something it'll have loot.  Containers out in the world also seemed like the loot inside was spawned individually since there were always things in a few of them even when an area had a bunch of players.  The Crafting system is much improved on from the Fallout 4 system, as you can actually create weapons and armor instead of just modding them...which you can also still do.  Also learn to spot fallen logs, wood is probably your most valuable building resource.  I am hoping that the building radius on your camp can be extended in the future because building is definitely the selling point to any type of survival game and right now it's literally just enough to throw up a shack.

So yeah, my biggest gripes are that I wish the map was actually bigger and more empty, and that your build radius is so limited if you do find a place you actually wish to build.  I think too many people are judging it based on it's namesake than they are on it's entry into the survival genre, which I honestly feel makes some big leaps forwards but also some steps back.  Can't chop down trees or break rocks, but there's TONS more to do than "build cube, wait till anti-socials destroy your shit, wait till they're offline to do the same".  It REALLY needs a text chatbox though, fuck the always online mics, hearing people describing their character creation while I was creating my own character was aggravating.

Bethesda has a hard-on for both Super Mutants and the Brotherhood of Steel. Why I don't know, but they do.

I don't see the big deal, there were already east coast- ohhh right, this takes place 25 years after the war.

The wikia has an explanation from somewhere, apparently "West Tek" released FEV into the drinking water before the war.  sure okay whatever
