Alexandria

Once upon a time, the Council of Wizards decided it would be a good idea to build a library. So each archmage set out to search the four corners of the world for a perfect place. They couldn't agree on anything when they reconvened, so they eventually ended up settling for the center of a city instead. Nobody was particularly happy with this turn of events, especially not the residents who would be displaced, but government officials agreed to give the wizards a permit if they would please stop setting senators on fire.

And that's how the streets of Alexandria were replaced by conjured domes and soaring geomantic towers.

The Council filled its library with every arcane secret known to man, and lesser mages flocked to Alexandria to learn them. Tomes were consulted, experiments were undertaken, and soon the gaggle of wizards came up with new findings to add to the shelves. Within a few short years, they needed to dig catacombs to deal with the sheer volume of paper. It's said that they eventually amassed enough tomes to fill six or seven levels.

Their knowledge and power shined like a metaphysical beacon. In fact, they glowed so brightly that they could be seen far outside the confines of reality, in realms inhabited by things made from nothing but hunger and malice. Old gods were drawn to it like moths to a candle, and the veil keeping them out grew thinner by the day. When they finally broke through, the wizards didn't stand a chance. The lucky ones were slaughtered where they stood. The rest succumbed to corruption.

Alexandria still stands, but only as a monument to what's been lost. The city is a dark fortress and its secrets are long since buried.

But they’re still there, if you set out to find them.

Introduction:

The wasteland surrounding Alexandria isn't as dangerous as the city itself, but it can come close.

On paper, dark magic doesn't actually extend past the outer walls. In reality, that doesn't do much to stop monsters from walking out and travelling far afield. Chimeras and imps have been known to go as far as neighboring city-states, and worse things lie in wait around the Council's ancient sanctum. So, as nine particular wizards approach the ruins, it's something of a relief that they haven't encountered any of the nastier beasts. A temporary blessing, if anything, but it's nice that nobody died before reaching the city proper. That would have been anticlimactic.

That truth is a little less reassuring as they step out of their wagons and approach the gates. Legend says that Alexandria's walls were impossible to breach during its days as a library. The sheet of black stone standing before the group doesn't quite live up to that reputation, but it's probably enchanted to hell and back. It's a good thing that the wizards are planning to use the gate, and an even better thing that some other explorer did some of the work for them. Two sheets of wrought iron that once served as doors have been blasted off their hinges by an ancient spell, and it seemed that nobody inside was intelligent enough to replace them.

That's not to say that there's nobody inside. There are plenty of monsters, such as the company of skeletons standing watch on an adjacent guard tower. Turns out the guildmasters were being serious when they referred to Alexandria as "the city of the dead." Deathly serious.

The squad of undead manning the walls doesn't seem to have noticed anything yet, but they have more discipline than you'd expect from the living dead. Regular patrols, orderly ranks, and armaments-- even crossbows!-- all say very bad things about the odds that the group's first challenge is a pushover.

That's all right. Magic has a lot of force behind it.
