Magic Martial Arts Arms Race - Core Thread

The worlds of the Zheng Mian and Bei Bu Nations of Warrior-Monks were, at one point in time, very separate. These continents were both homes to very spiritual but militaristic peoples, and their fighting styles were a deeply ingrained and important part of their beliefs and cultures as a whole. The gods of both worlds sought to bless their people with powers of the Elements, the Body, and the Mind, and as both civilizations grew they seamlessly integrated the blessings of the gods into their Styles.

Warrior Monks trained exclusively in melee combat utilizing Armed and Unarmed styles. Basic Armed Styles were some of the first ones to rise to prominence before the gods intervened. They required only the knowledge of oneself and the weapon that acted as an extension of their body. These Styles are often easier for Warrior Monks to learn and build upon, combining standard training with a weapon in addition to specialized techniques, strike focuses, mindsets, and combat doctrines. The ease with which these are learned lends itself to greater numbers of Warrior Monks practicing these Styles. Magical Armed Styles, on the other hand, prove to be very difficult to develop, learn, and master, leading to smaller numbers of Warrior Monks using these styles. Magical Armed Styles are able to use Elemental Magic to complement their fighting style, greatly increasing their strength on the battlefield. The Elemental Magic gifted by the gods is divided into five categories: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.

Unarmed Styles pushed the development of the Body and Mind further than their Armed counterparts. A stronger sense of inner perfection leads to every Unarmed Style having at least one Elemental affiliation, although they also unlock the ability to manipulate their own Qi to act as an extension of their will, something Magical Armed Styles are incapable of. The use of one's Qi has near limitless potential. Unarmed Styles are wildly varied in how complex they get thanks to the sheer number of possibilities perfection of oneself provides, meaning these Styles could be anywhere from the most ubiquitous to the rarest Styles utilized by Warrior Monks.

Unfortunately, these gods feuded between one another and had brought the peoples of the Zheng Mian and Bei Bu into being in order to settle their own differences. Both worlds were eventually folded together by these gods, merging the continents that'd been shaped to fit together precisely. The people, of course, do not realize they are being manipulated into believing the other is an enemy that must be fought and defeated, and willingly engage in combat.

The fold acts as a barrier that prevents the armies of either side to march directly onto the other's land. Instead, it brings the armies to a magical area of space devoid of all features but the light grey tile floors. In order to begin attacking the other continent, the warriors must first push their opponents out of this space where there are no variables but the warriors themselves. Once beyond the fold however, the nation's army can freely push through until they themselves are pushed back to and through the void space.

----------------

You are the gods of the Zheng Mian or Bei Bu. They are currently nondescript, as are their continents, as it will be up to you to create them. Once you decide on which team you will join, please announce it here and then join the discord server. You will be responsible for working with your teammates before the game proper begins to answer three sets of questions that will define your peoples and what they start this war with. They are all listed below so you can effectively discuss ideas, but will be answered over the course of three turns in the respective team threads. Once a vote has a general consensus I will roll using the same set of rules for standard turns outlined below:

What type of landscape did your people settle on? This place had a great impact on your people, and defined what became your peoples first Style. What Style was it? This Style is Unarmed and of a singular Element influenced by your people's surroundings. Proposals for Unarmed Styles should include the mindset it's practitioners aim to be in, as well as how the Element is utilized, and any techniques or strikes they specialize in.

As your people expanded outward they required larger armies to face their growing number of enemies. What type of lands laid adjacent to yours did you desire enough to take by force? Describe two distinct biomes. What Basic Armed Style was developed to accomplish this? A Basic Armed Style proposal should include the weapon being developed as well as the overall combat doctrines drilled by Warrior Monks using the Style, in addition to the same subjects of mindset, and special strikes and techniques as an Unarmed proposal.

With your closest enemies conquered, your people sought to expand their influence and spread their beliefs to the ends of the continent. During this time the favor of the gods made itself known through the powers of the first Master who led the armies to the shores. This Master is likely to be relatively easy to bring into being, and so they shouldn't be considered the baseline difficulty for your own estimates of future Master proposals, especially if they're created alongside a new Style as this one is. Describe the Master and what makes them stand out on the battlefield. They also championed either a Magical Armed Style or a Qi-enhanced Unarmed Style. If describing a Magical Armed Style, remember to include the weapon that is developed for it, the Element that is used and how it is utilized, combat doctrines, mindset, special strikes, and techniques. If you decide to utilize a Qi-enhanced Unarmed Style, remember to include the Element for the base style, as well as what sort of Qi powers they use, whether they be "buffs" or "debuffs" they can apply or energy-based attacks. Remember though that while this Style is being designed for a unique character, the Style does not necessarily need to be made Unique and could potentially see more widespread use on the battlefield. Additionally, what were the three biomes conquered during this time?

A Fated Encounter

Temir was a monk of the Bei Bu, one of the better Fulcrum Style Warrior-Monks from the Spirit Pool monastery in the Fulcrum Mountains. He had just gone to sleep after an extensive day of meditation and training in the Fulcrum Touch Style and now found himself in a dream.

Tlachinolli was a monk of the Zheng Mian, one of the better Laughing Lizard Warrior-Monks from the Monastery of the First Light deep within the Jungle of Light. She had just gone to sleep after an exciting day of celebration and training in the Laughing Lizard Style and now found herself in a dream.

They both stood meters apart, an impenetrable fog settling millimeters above the floor just enough to obscure it from view. The endless grey stretched out infinitely in all directions around the two warriors. Temir and Tlachinolli sized one another up as a voice deep within their minds spoke to them.

Test your might.

Tlachinolli's mouth slanted into a smirk and she took her stance. She hopped around on her toes and shook her arms out before bringing her elbows tight to her body with fists raised. This active dance warmed her body and affected the air around her, causing it to shimmer in her wake and leave afterimages briefly burned into the air behind her. Temir's left foot slid backward and he firmly rooted himself, readying to respond to whatever this glowing, hopping fighter had in store.

Initially it wasn't much as both monks circled one another. Tlachinolli was much faster and able to move around Temir rapidly, which left a brief drag in the air behind her almost as if this place wasn't keeping up with her. He knew this wasn't the case though, as she was always at the leading edge and was moving at a perfectly normal speed. As Tlachinolli slowly spiraled inward toward Temir she began to feign strikes in an attempt to cause Temir to react to the wrong thing or at the wrong time. Tlachinolli lunged in and popped two rapid strikes off on Temir, but pulled them short. The first strike didn't shake him, but the second seemed to come at him a little too long to be a feint and he moved to counter the attack. Temir stepped in and briefly lowered his guard as he tried to grip the arm that wasn't actually striking at him. Tlachinolli took advantage of the opening and landed a solid whipping kick beneath Temir's ribs. He slid back and immediately reset and recovered, pushing Tlachinolli to do the same and reassess the fight.

Tlachinolli took the initiative again as she danced around Temir, never displaying a tell for her true intentions as she began to mix feigned and real strikes. Temir responded better than anticipated, not falling for initial feints after his first error, but was still on the back foot. Tlachinolli kept working Temir's legs with vicious kicks while he was occupied with her arms, and landed a pair of solid blows to the upper body that went partially defended against.

Temir wasn't hurt, necessarily. His opponent's blows were light, not fully dedicated. She was testing him and trying to force him to make a single mistake or take just one misstep. Temir shifted backward and Tlachinolli took it as a chance for another reset so she did the same. Temir saw the shift in the flow of battle and kicked off with his back foot, lunging forward with a bent knee and managing to grab Tlachinolli by the shoulders. As his fingers squeezed, Tlachinolli's tunic turned to iron where Temir gripped, revealing the real power of Fulcrum Touch Style, digging into Tlachinolli's shoulders and giving Temir firm fingerholds to use as his lunging leap struck Tlachinolli in the gut while he yanked her forward.

Temir released his grip as he landed and Tlachinolli recoiled briefly, her aura fading as her "dance" stopped for a brief moment. She regained her composure and once again both fighters squared off. Temir took the offensive this time, testing Tlachinolli's own reflexes with feigned grabs and lunges. As Temir began to apply more pressure Tlachinolli threw a punch to create some distance between the two fighters. Temir was ready for this and grabbed her wrist, locking it into place with his iron grip while he spun into Tlachinolli, locked her elbow with his free hand, swung his hip and back into her torso, and threw Tlachinolli over his shoulder and onto the ground. The mist briefly retreated from the impact and revealed the large light grey tiles that made up the floor of this "dreamspace". Temir followed up with a powerful stomp but Tlachinolli rolled backward and back behind Temir, who faced her but didn't have an opportunity to strike before she was back up and in her stance.

The fight began in earnest again. Punished for her defensive posture, Tlachinolli once again took to probing Temir's own defenses. She mixed feints with real strikes once more, landing a number of kicks to Temir's lower legs without response and one hook that split the skin over Temir's cheekbone. Another clenched fist threatened to strike Temir, a real one this time, and his hands once again found their target in the mirage.

Temir's hands both gripped Tlachinolli's forearm and twisted it inward, forcing her to bend forward slightly. In the same moment Temir stepped to her side, slid one hand onto Tlachinolli's shoulder, locked the joint in iron, and threw a series of powerful knees into her stomach. One, two, three, four intense blows before Temir bent her back upward, her face contorted in pain, and whipped her back down, striking his knee into her mouth.

As her teeth exploded from her gums, Tlachinolli and Temir both heard the voice in their heads once more.

Finish Her.

Tlachinolli was on all fours, teeth and blood flowing freely from her mouth onto the fog-covered floor. Temir walked over and kicked Tlachinolli's now mirageless form onto her back and mounted her. placing a knee under each armpit. He wrapped his hands in the ends of Tlachinolli's sleeves and turned the cloth to iron before using Tlachinolli's own sleeves as bludgeons, beating her about the head until he was sure she was dead.

Tlachinolli's body ignited as Temir stood and watched, silently contemplating her ashes as they blew away in the windless arena.

Fatality.

Temir felt something rising in him. Was it elation from his victory? He looked down and it was not, it was, in fact, his body turning to iron.

Another Fated Encounter

A force from the Bei Bu made up of Two-Fifths Warrior-Monks on patrol wound up vanishing one night, with each and every monk falling asleep simultaneously only to wake up in some sort of grey empty landscape - save for a statue next to a smoldering fire in the distance, but even more pressing, a force of warriors in white shirts and pants armed with curious looking glaives. In fact, if your people didn't know better...

A force from the Zheng Mian made up of Steadfast Scorpion Warrior-Monks on patrol wound up vanishing one night, with each and every monk falling asleep simultaneously only to wake up in some sort of empty grey landscape - save to the smoldering fire next to the statue in the distance, but even more pressing, a force of warriors in maguas, shalbars, light shoes, hand wrappings, and straw hats, with a sword in one hand and an interesting axe in the other. But more curiously they all wore metallic masks over their lower face and neck. In fact, if your people didn't know better...

Those other guys are using Stellar Iron in ways that go against your god's wishes! And as if on cue, the voice of the gods echoed in all their minds...

Test your might.

The Steadfast Scorpion Warrior-Monks were quick to form up into a "hedgehog" as they were compelled to fight. The Two-Fifths Warrior-Monks on the other hand were incredibly quick to form up and move around the tightly-packed, dense formation. The Stellar Glaives used by the Steadfast Scorpion Warrior-Monks were two meters long, incredibly sharp, and easily ruined the first few Two-Fifths Warrior-Monks who tried to approach the formation. The Two-Fifths Warrior-Monks had a hard time getting past the devastatingly sharp cloud of Stellar Glaives, and were often caught by one rapid flurry of blows when trying to deal with another.

The Two-Fifths Warrior-Monks utilized their Aibaltas for the majority of the opening engagement, utilizing an angled metal rasp running a foot down the shaft from the axe head to trap and control enemy glaives. They attempted to work their way through the constantly moving glaive barrier, and were able to start pulling Steadfast Scorpion Warrior-Monks out of position at high cost to themselves. While the Two-Fifths Warrior-Monks were suffering at the hands of the Steadfast Scorpion Warrior-Monks, the Steadfast Scorpion Warrior-Monks' unit cohesion eventually caved under the Two-Fifths Warrior-Monks relentless assault.

When engaged one-on-one, the Two-Fifths Warrior-Monks seemed to have the advantage, using their aibaltas to gain control of the Stellar Glaives and maneuver their way within their opponent's reach and well within optimal Jian range. The individual duels that broke out were not definitively in the favor of the Two-Fifths Warrior-Monks however, as they were outnumbered by an enemy that was already more numerous before the battle of attrition against the hedgehog formation. Steadfast Scorpion Warrior-Monks also proved to be masters of the rebound, recovering from blocked strikes before the aibalta truly gained control and launching attacks from other directions in rapid succession. In the end it came down to one last Two-Fifths Warrior-Monk facing down the final Steadfast Scorpion Warrior-Monks. They were both covered in blood - theirs, their enemies, their friends - and were showing signs of fatigue. The Steadfast Scorpion Warrior-Monk took a stance in preparation of launching a "tail strike", and the tired Two-Fifths Warrior-Monk pressed the attack.

As they entered each other's range, the aibalta was held out ready to meet the Stellar Glaive as it came down, whipped from overhead. The first strike was caught by the aibata's rasp, but was pulled back and struck again in the blink of an eye. As the glaive bounced off of the rasp a second time it was hastily swung back down from the side in a "claw strike" that was just barely blocked by the aibalta's haft, and another quickly recovered strike with a spinning backward leap from the other side, striking the Two-Fifths Warrior-Monk's Guardian Mask with enough force to cause an explosion of sparks, though neither piece of equipment was damaged. The Steadfast Scorpion Warrior-Monk threw yet another rapid strike, this one a thrust, and this time the Stellar Glaive tasted flesh as it left a deep laceration in the Two-Fifths Warrior-Monk's side beneath his ribs. But he had also managed to trap his enemy's weapon in his aibalta, holding it at bay while stepping and lunging forward with his Jian to just pierce the Steadfast Scorpion Warrior-Monk's chest.

Both warriors collapsed against one another and bled out.

Flawless Victory.
