Drett pauses for a full minute, lowering his mask enough to give his eyes full view before returning it to place and pulling his hood up around him and his antennae, only the tips sticking out over his mask.

This is the sky Kara mentioned... As beautiful as it is, I feel entirely too exposed.

Drett goes to join the others in examining the Cairn. Anything I can learn from it? Also going to put my +1 into linguistics.

Possible. You know that the church has methods of communicating with divers mid dive, though you don't know what they are.
Any chance for a knowledge roll to see if Adam knows anything more?

Quote
Adam talks to the men manning the system and works out the price of a descent to just past the pilgrim's walk, as well as where they should drill out so as not to cause harm to the lift system. He pays the 4 fathom toll and Vikkan carefully aligns the bore with the attachment system, docking into it before huge mechanical arms swing the bore out over the seemingly infinite pit of the abyssal path and begin carrying it down.
Can we assume Adam also made arrangements for taking the lift back up later on?

For bore fuel, will you tell us how much we spent or would you prefer if we try to count it for you (keeping in mind we might make mistakes)?

Feeling that the bore suddenly lurched to a halt, Adam sauntered up to the control room after soothing the more antsy pilgrims a little.
"Did we hit anything?"

"Vikkan, come check the periscope. I think we hit some water. Maybe we need to start going straight down before continuing sideways."
She let Vikkan see for himself while she went to address the rest of the crew through the intercom.
: Gonna be planning some slight course adjustments. Please bear with us, we're almost there. We'll let you know when we're going to be reorienting so you can brace yourselves. :

"Hmm, wet sand huh? Yeah, that makes sense given that the river runs just above this next part of the route. I concur, we'll want to dig down a little first. If that doesn't work we can still go down into the caverns and hike the last small stretch, or dig down under the caves and keep drilling to avoid the caverns. "

Hmmm. They could be using items created or modified with diving. Theoretically you could create a bell that would ring in the dive if it was rung in the waking world, or something like that.

Sure.
Lets go by the distance estimates on paris's map. Even if its not totally accurate its probably very close and thats good enough for me.

Consider what function the eye might have. Does the eye look like somebody who knows how could easily instal it into an eye socket?

Seeing, you hope.

Yes...the hard part will be removing the eye. Once that's done you can just pop this in like any glass eye.

"It is a bit unfortunate that we will have to change our route like that, do you know the extension of the river?"
Just wait for the bore to start moving again.

Wait and meditate in my room until the bore continues on it's path. Unless it doesn't. In that case, go find the bore driver and ask what's the problem.

Use the automatic map and the periscopes (when it's safe to use them) to help Vikkan navigate safely. Maybe my knowledge of geology and navigation can also help?

Is it possible to make a bore amphibious? Could you connect the engine to some propellers and maybe add some deployable control fins and ballast tanks?
With the number of waterways in the underground it might be useful.

Spoiler: "Kara" the Corven (click to show/hide)
[9] You get the feeling that this isn't a river you've dug into.

The bore is already technically amphibious. Its water tight (probably) and the drill can be used as a propeller, albeit not a great one. But it is possible to modify it to be more amphibious.

"Yeah, we should try to avoid that."

Try to move one down before resuming drilling towards the objective like before. In case we poke water again, use navigation skill if applicable to tell if there's a comfortable path that allows avoiding that squishy patch of sand.

You pull the bore back a few lumbering steps and immediately the hole you punctured in that sandy material swarms with creatures. Ants. Each is about a meter and a half long with dark reddish-brown carapace and a large, flat, seemingly eyeless head. They flow out, a dozen within the first second, and then a slowly lessening amount every second after. They don't swarm over to the bore though, the simply start to wander around the tunnel, chasing each other around with surprising speed and searching for...something. Some are already gathering chunks of stone and carrying them back towards the hole.

A moment later something passing in front of the hole. The hole is maybe 10 feet in diameter, large enough to let these ants out but not large enough for the thing that likes beyond. Its another ant but of a completely different magnitude. Its at least five times larger than the ants swarming around the bore and though its body plan is similar to the other ants it isn't identical. Proportionally its body is much skinnier and its legs are longer, but its head is the real difference. The head of the giant ant is grossly enlarged, a meter and a half wide, two meters long, a giant shield of black carapace sporting meter and a half long mandibles. The mandibles are something like a stag's horn; inward curved and bristling with seemingly random spikes.

The giant ant stares eyelessly out into the tunnel, remaining totally still except for its antennae which extend out into the tunnel and bob about, seemingly randomly.

"Well." Schitter says,

"This is rather interesting."

Walk down the stone path and try to guess how long we have until the relic is burnt away.

Spoiler: Schitter (click to show/hide)
Yup, down the path with the others.

"Whoa. Is this the sky? It's beautiful, just like it was described in the stories."

Go down the stone path. Also how far away are the buildings?
Spoiler: Alex Wells (click to show/hide)
Impossible to say how long until the relic is consumed. Time may be flowing faster or slower here regardless.

Alex, Nyw, and, Schitter walk out of the garden and on the stone path. The path proves to be little more than a carved niche in the stone of the mountain, maybe two feet wide, like someone took an enormous chisel and scoped a narrow track out of the rock. Nyw, large as he is, has to walk sideways so his broad shoulders don't scrape the wall or force him to walk dangerously near the edge. The path spirals up the mountain at a steep angle, taking the group at least one full rotation before connecting to another structure. This building is made wood, also painted red, with white walls and bare windows laced with wooden crossbeams that divide them into 16 smaller squares. The path leads straight up to an open, doorless entryway. From what you can see this building is nothing but a short hallway suspended from the mountain face by dozens of wooden supports sunk into the stone. Laquered wood makes up the floor, with walls of white painted cob and a wooden ceiling. Along the hall are what appear to be idols set into small niches and then, to the right is a path that seems to curve straight into the stone of the mountain.

Despite the blowing snow and altitude, no one feels cold.

Join Ashul in inspecting the Cairn, anything peculiar about it? Then join Ashul again in going towards the stone path.

"Snow? Sky? This is a troubling Vision, indeed. Be calm, fellow Visioneers, remember, we are not truly on teh surface, but in a Vision. Things like this are bound to happen. Notice that it hasn't affected us, except for being loud. Don't let it distract you. Schitter, do not stray too far from the group. Though, from the looks of things, that is probably the correct direction for us to be going."

Examine the Cairn. Does it have markings, words, or distinguishing features?
May as well approach the archway and look out alongthe stone path. is it the same as the spiral path up the mountain?

Spoiler: Vision Notes (click to show/hide)
The Cairn is, like all cairns, made of carefully assembled stones. The whole of the thing resembles, very vaguely, a human figure, though rounded and pot like so that it resembles the vague outline of a head and shoulders before sweeping down in a solid mass to the ground. As far as Cairn's go its extremely well made, almost cyclopean, with hundreds or even thousands of lumps and shards and pebbles and river rocks all tightly packed together with very little space left between. However, if there is a particular significance to it, its not immediately obvious; there are no markings or obvious patterns on it.

Ashul and Clate walk over to the arch and look out. Indeed the path here does lead to a cut stone path that continues up the mountain.

"Curious. Do we have a stated objective?"

Serenely admire the trees. Can I tell anything interesting about them, the world, or the quest from the trees?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
[15]
You can't tell anything about the world from the trees other than that  this world is apparently old. These trees are ancient, though carefully maintained at a relatively small size via constant trimming. They grow in odd and twisting ways, their gray wood filled with whorls. They're beautiful, and a testament to endless years of careful control. It takes a powerful will to do something like this.

"We probably don't want to disturb these creatures. Let's just back off a little more before we drill down, shall we?"

Does Adam recognize this species of cave ant? If yes, what can you tell us about them (things like aggressiveness/territoriality, how large their nests usually are, are they capable of piercing bores with heir mandibles or secretions, ...).

Could we use the bore's sensors to see if there's another ant tunnel below (perhaps by reading the temperature below us and comparing it to the temperatures of the other surrounding walls)? If yes, try doing that.

"Please, stay still. Maybe it won't attack if we don't provoke it." Kara whispered, as if the ant could hear her through the bore.
"I think they're trying to close the hole. We should be safe after they do."

Run and grab the TNT from storage and head for an airlock. If I have time, use rope to tie self to airlock. If the thing charges, light the TNT and throw it. I don't care about killing it, slowing it down or collapsing the tunnel should hopefully be enough to let us escape. I mean, it's probably a protector, not a hunter.

Inform others as I meet them of what's going on so they can help if they want. Tell them to keep quiet. No noise, no panic, keep the Pilgrims locked.

Run around the bore and check all the air locks, also check any weak points. Make sure there aren’t any openings. After that I’ll put myself in the room with the nomads.

"Yeah, it looks like they just want to close the hole. I have a feeling we might be better off staying still and waiting until the hole is fixed, unless someone can remember if that's not a good idea to do due to their behavior."

See if Vikkan remembers anything about those ants. Turn off the drill's motion to avoid drawing attention, in case it's still on. If we're attacked... Try to escape in a sensible way, I suppose.

"From the way it is feeling around with those antennae, it appears to be searching for us. Given that we don't know how the big ant will respond, it seems safer to me to make sure it doesn't find us. Assuming you could move us back without crushing one smaller creatures."

Examine the idols with Ashul, see if there's anything out of the ordinary about them. Also take a look at what they're standing on, if they're attached or if there's other security measures. Don't touch them yet, though.

Then follow the team into the mountain.

Do we think that touching or removing them might anger some aspect of the vision, making our sojourn here more difficult? I am tempted, but at the moment I think they will be of little value. Especially compared to the prize we seek."
