Why are you all voting to go to a place where it's impossible to grow crops and we won't see another human being outside of our own for at least four years or so? I get the whole "Coal is good" sentiment, but we can stay warm in the Peninsula from small amounts of burnable material and some insulation. It's not like there's coal in one place and one place only, considering the continent used to be covered in swamps everywhere.

Basic supply of heating is more important than food. Mount Erebus at least has open lava pool.

I'm not sure we would really freeze to death inside, with insulation from coats and such, at -10ish C.
It's cold, but it's barely below freezing cold in the winter, and is in the low danger zone for frostbite.
In the mountains, we'd deal with two to three times that, and be in an environment where we can't beg the british for polio medicine and boots.

We have 800 coal, food, and the ability to farm. You can always trek there yourself if you want frozen coal that badly.

Maybe it takes that long to die of starvation - in ideal conditions, at that - but people will become unproductive far sooner than that, especially in the cold of the mountains. If there's no food, there's not going to be any coal mining, making your argument moot.
Also, lava is dangerous to be around.
