What do you do when a fortress is large enough that it's boring?

I guess I could just retire it...but destroying it sounds way better!

Apart from the normal methods, what is the coolest way to watch your empire crumble?

You could always visit the circus.

Flood it with magma!

Let a forgotten beast into your fortress!

Open the doors to a goblins siege!

Let in a werebeast and turn your fortress furry!

Get your dwarves to grab a necromancer's book. Make your dwarves into necromancers with it. Drop in some corpses.

I'm not fond of flooding with magma or water, the FPS approaches zero and there is no movement. If you do something that will cause much fighting, having Soundsense running will allow you to turn it up and kick back, waiting for the screaming and fighting to begin.

Order the people of the fort into a courtyard in the caverns, then drop an enormous rock on the lot of them.

Hollow out an area around the entire fortress, Three squares thick, Next you build a Support at the bottom of the fortress and link it to a Lever at the top, finally you cut off the final ties leaving it only supported by the support and pull the lever.  As a bonus, it leaves you with a rather interesting hole if you come visit in adventure mode.

flood the circus with water and then try colonizing it!
try capturing the clowns and make a demoniac zoo!
reanimate dead clown using necomancy and let them free on the surface!

basically try doing extremely fun stuff until it fails

i send all my 150 dorfs with crossbows to conquer my elf neighbor. this is maybe interessting for legends mode, which i didnt used yet.
would be interessting if you can join the fight in adventure.

Probably not the most creative method, but an easy one.  Build an extremely tall stairway with a very large bridge on top.  Use burrows to send all the dwarves topside but one, who will pull the lever to the bridge.  The dwarves will be flung around, exploding into pieces on hitting the ground.  Set the lever to kill the puller too, by collapsing the stairway/bridge system atop him.

From the outside, the fortress is unbreached, with no enemies in sight.  But there are dismembered body parts coating the surface, as if a dwarf bomb went off.  It's probably one of the faster end-the-fort methods outside of just abandonment or waiting for starvation.

You can see other armies in adventure mode, so perhaps if you sent them somewhere farther than two weeks away.

So far updating to May's release seems effective enough. Otherwise I'd recommend going adventurer, using your fort as a base to become a legendary badass, leading the military on conquests until they're pretty much destroyed, then returning and slaughtering everyone. NOTE: May result in embarrassing death to tantruming Dwarven Child.
