"Ah, there's one more thing I need to ask of you, a certain sch—"

"Wait, you're not changing the deal on me now, are you?!", the diplomat simultaneously erupts and interrupts. You begin trying to explain – "No, it's just that there's this book—" – as he continues heedless: "I spent three days without sleep just convincing my thegn of the value of partnership with Abystok and the skill of your growers and herdsdwarves so that he would even think of allowing our people to resettle here, if you think you can just demand something new from me now then I swear on my clan I will turn around, gather my countrymen, cancel the deal, go back to Pareshtan, and eat the ore you sent for smelting!"

You are, obviously, aghast at this undiplomatic outburst, but you also realise, as his careful demeanor drops away, that this is a dwarf exhausted beyond mortal reckoning for some reason. Perhaps this Thegn of Pareshtan is more difficult to deal with than you could have imagined.

A) Try to convince him that you haven't altered the deal, you just want to make another separate inquiry on top of it.
B) Let the matter drop and say you weren't talking about anything important.
C) Ask, diffidently, if he would perhaps prefer to move to Abystok himself and live a simpler life as an owlbat farmer or something.

After a couple minutes of gentle convincing, the Pareshtan diplomat comes to understand the nature of your request. He agrees to locate Kerbiban and a scribe and find out how much it would cost to get copies of the scholar's work made; he's especially happy when he realises that there's no particular reason why he would even have to include the Thegn in the process. With that concluded, you send him on to Nedru to collect the stuff you've had warehoused for the purpose, after which you assume he heads back to Pareshtan.

About half a week after that, a churl you vaguely recognise stops you in the hallway and tells you, in a conspiratorial tone, of a problem he wants you to deal with. It seems that there has been a sudden decline across many of the underground farms, especially the mud-fields, which are drying out well ahead of season. Naturally, this has had an adverse effect on the crops still being grown there, and the early-winter harvest which Abystok depends upon is threatened. Although it could simply be bad weather, this churl, who says his name is Hamison, is insistent that something magical is afoot.

A) Send my spies to investigate.
B) Send runesmiths to investigate, if it's magical! !
C) I will investigate personally!
D) Maybe I can hire somebody to do this?
E) Ignore the silly raving lunatic. If there's a problem, we'll just tighten our belts and perhaps buy food from someone else. We can't be the only food exporter in the area, right?

You agree to look into the matter, and the churl thanks you profusely and moves along. Afterward, you convene with Gostell and tell him about his new mission. He nods and agrees to look into it, also mentioning that the spy training program seems to be going well.

Later that day, you get interrupted by another meeting! It seems that a diplomat from the town of Kukigeer, a bit further away than any other town you've dealt with so far, has arrived unannounced and is asking for you.

A) Cool, let's see what this one wants!
B) Unannounced? Sounds suspicious, someone else should take care of it.
