One dorf, pulling his hat lower so that everything about his face above the top lip was in shadow, cleared his throat softly, "I actually like nobles and their demands are quite reasonable", barely a whisper louder than the raspy breathing of others at the table.

"I know it's tradition... but why do we have to all race out into a battleground to be the first to pry them off those nasty corpses?  Why can't our tailors just make the loincloths for us?"

Having listened without watching, this dwarf lifts his head and swings his eyes right and left across the table.

His brown beard is rigid and glistens, with hanging braids adorned with many small spikes.

He pushes a finger against one of the spikes and says, "Cat tallow."

One would certainly consider dwarves as ignorant alcohol-dependent imbeciles.

I like nobles. Their mandates tend to be fairly easy to fulfill, and the mayors labor night and day to salvage their citizens' wavering sanity. Our fortresses would die much much faster without a noble or two to keep things running smoothly.

True tho, a broker ,manager, and/or mayor would serve well in most fortresses.

A dwarf with a sullen glare says: I confess I voted for a gremlin in last mayoral election to annoy the nobles... I never imagined he would win...

The fortress of boatmurdered was the single greatest success in all of dwarven history.

Definitely.

Yeah.
