Maybe you've got enough weapon and shield upgrades. I am/was still in the starter ship with only a couple of upgrades.
Problem is, you can't run, cant hide, cant even pay them off after you've started fighting. if you start fighting and realize you're going to loose, there is absolutely *nothing* you can do, except wait to die.
Save scumming sort of works, till it auto saves in the middle of a fight after your guns have been damaged and are no longer operational.
The whole mechanic just feels bad from a game-play perspective to me.

My experience is that if you pick a direction and fly in it at max speed as soon as you're attacked, they won't be able to catch up and meaningfully attack you before your impulse engine comes back on line. Admittedly, I generally shoot them down whenever I run into any (regardless of what kind of ship and armaments I have, but I've got ~800h logged so it's probably safe to say my time wasted translated into some competence at space combat), so if it's changed recently and you can't outrun them any more, I might not be aware of that. I DO know that "pick a direction and fly for your life" still works on Sentinel interceptors, though. I'd also add that in my experience, this works if you're starting to lose as well.

One question, perhaps insultingly obvious, but since I never knew to do it for a very long time it seems worth asking... are you recharging your ship's shields during combat?

When the next expedition is out gonna play again.

gonna add

https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/2675?tab=description
https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/2642

or just the first one if second is incompatible. There is actually a bunch of biome mods, but some aren't very up to date or compatible with each other and some have patches for them all, but again out of date.

pretty much fixes my entire (personal) thing with barren looking worlds. When I see a forest, I want an actual forest :P

It's possible you just don't know how to do space combat.
You just hold down "S" and keep tapping spacebar till the Pirates are dead. Prior to knowing that, I died.

I found a planet you'd like. Cold planet with an actual forest. The trees are kinda leafy for -95 Celsius, but you can't have everything. Even named it after you.

Worlds update part 2 is out. Though I noticed thread hasn't been posted on in a while.

Tons of changes since last post. And part 2 looks amazing, comes with a new expedition too apparently

Here is the trailer for it

I've seen some stuff about it, but I am unsure what actually has changed.

Like...if you can't just say: "They improved this" or "You can do that", then...it clearly is just marketing hype?

Hey, you're missing the most important part:

Inventory sort button.

More seriously I'm giving the game another go after several years of not touching it... it's changed a lot, but still the kinda awkwardly kludged exploration-turned-crafter deal it was. Mixed feelings, though the advanced difficulty settings (including being able to start with full inventory capacity!) help.

I dip back into NMS occasionally, mostly when I want kind of a chill exploration type experience.

I've found it doesn't hold my attention for very long though... like I'll be into it for a week or two, then don't touch it for 6 months.

I haven't play it since probably first "big" patch and had huge issues with the game, did they do anything about those?
  • Sameyness of everything - from planets and their flora/fauna to the game having 5 types of encounters. Every building of one type being the same as every other. Every puzzle is the same. Every reward sucks.
  • LoD (level of detail) and draw distance (and lack of configuration for it) - flying low to the ground at higher speed than minimal makes everything blurred, low resolution texture of grainy shit.
  • Combat - on the ground being free farm at levels you can do and extremely easy to disengage if not. In space - just forget about it and land to disengage.

Ironically, those are the things that got fixed.  They were on the way to getting fixed prior to the "Worlds update part 2" promotion.
...maybe I'm just not impressed because I was impressed in 2024 when they were working on putting it all together.  :-X
