Same, more or less.  I haven't actually tried to build a megaproject in that vein, but the last few times I played it was mostly to build a large, elaborate castle above ground.  It usually takes a long time to get something like that completed, which keeps me interested for a while when I do play.

My favourite part of fortress mode is watching it all go down in flames. There's something so cathartic about watching a fortress crumble. The bigger and better the fortress, the bigger and better the demise!

I really like the procedural creatures and artifacts. Some forgotten beasts are really cool and I draw most every one I encounter. Interpreting the description of that "square-shelled quadriped composed of ash" gets the creative juices flowing.
