The House of Storms

The House of Storms is a DnD5 Spelljammer game based out of the Port of Sharn. The players are the crew of the Astral Kraken, a House Lyrandar airship and experimental Spelljammer. Spelljammers fly through space on sails, visiting distant worlds. The players will initially begin as extraplanar supply agents, exploring and bring back rare reagents, before being drawn into broader galactic events. The campaign will run from level 1 to level 20, and will incorporate player characters from a variety of realms, both published and original.

Eberron is a world of wide magic, not high magic. Common and uncommon magic items are readily purchased in shops throughout the Five Nations. Generally available magical items can be found here:

Sharn Shopping Guide

Magic is a part of day to day life in Eberron. When you're done in the washroom, you wave your hands over a cleansing stone, which magically cleans your body and clothes. Lamplights travel the streets at night, paid by the state to cast light on streetlamps every hour. Arcaneers and wandslingers are frequent sights in war, with cantrips as common a weapon as any martial weapon. Higher level magic, however, is very rare. A pilgrimage across the continent to the head of the Church of the Silver Flame would likely be required to find someone who could cast Raise Dead, and more powerful magics are the stuff of legend.

Eberron is a runepunk setting, with a mix of steampunk and noir themes. Much of the game however will be set in the broader galaxy, the nature of which is still unknown to our characters, but will provide opportunities for heroism and profit.

Post Character Details and Backgrounds Below! Some characters may have prologue scenes. Some may join partway into the first job.

Dullahan: Warforged fighter/arcaneer of sorts. He was designed a while back for the war, built to be a terrifying cavalry unit, meant to cause fear and ghost stories to spring up. Shake the defenders, and thus make it easier to rout the enemy. To that purpose, he cuts a rather intimidating figure, looking like a large, detailed suit of armor, with no head, the helmeted head usually either held in his arm, attached to his waist, or floating around him if he animates it as a familiar.

Even with the fall of Cyre, he still cares deeply for the refugees, they'd hailed him as a hero and given him a home and a people after all. He will still give his loyalty to Prince Oargev when it's needed. Though that doesn't stop him from adventuring to advance himself... and perhaps give him more opportunities to bring more back to the refugees.

Stella d'Vadalis: A ranger who focuses primarily upon staying at long range and striking without being detected. She's of average and somewhat thin. Her complexion suits her demeanor: Pale but not sickly, complimented by white hair and light blue eyes. She bears the Dragonmark, although does not advertise it.

The reason for this is likely due to her relationship with the Vadalis clan. She is at odds with the family due to her discovery and continued investigation of rather unscrupulous experiments that the family was involved in. Consequently, she has been a drifter until recently.

Posting on behalf of a player who's account is still pending:

Sormias: Vaelguinar Bard/Chronicler of Magic. The best way to describe Vaelguinar would be an eldritch abomination in humanoid form. Ageless and unnaturally beautiful to the point of the uncanny valley. Vaelguinar are usually distinguished from humans by their ruby eyes and ebony hair.

Sormias is the 43rd grandchild of the silver emperor Nyxalis. Bubbly and carefree, Sormias is always searching for new experiences and sensations that she can catalogue.

Back on her home plane she was researching the leylines as a final thesis to complete her training as a bard at Kaelis Academy. She was wisked away to a place unknown to her, accidentally summoned to this strange world by the Cult of the Dragon below. Sormias, like most Vaelguinar would, took this development in stride, excited for the rare opportunity to experience an entirely unfamiliar world even if that takes several millennia. She is in no real hurry to return to her home.

Hel-Shredder Rippedspleens, Hobgoblin Wizard:

Hel-Shredder's mother and father met on the battlefield during The Last War. She was a common mercenary from Ghaal’dar, and he was a Sharn local of modest wealth who could trace his name back to the days when Hobgoblins ruled the city. Both wound up fighting under the banner of House Lyrandar, and both were slain in battle within a year of each other while their only child was only seven. Because the young Hobgoblin lost his parents to their cause, and because he showed great potential for Arcane Magic, the marked humans of House Lyrandar took young Hel-Shredder in, and raised him as part of their organization.

Because of his great intellect, deep loyalty to the family, and moral flexibility, Hel-Shredder has performed many jobs for House Lyrandar over his brief 24 years. He has been a desk jockey and an airship officer, an arcane scholar and a manager of manual labor. What he is most proud of, however, is his minor role in the construction of the Astral Kraken, a ship that he considers to be his 'baby'. The day that he was offered a position that would allow him to both organize and partake in the voyages of the Astral Kraken was the happiest of his life.

Hel-Shredder is first and foremost a loyal foot soldier of House Lyrandar and proponent of their agenda. He also makes a trustworthy and dependable ally to those who have earned his respect and/or friendship. Beyond these loyalties, however, Hel-Shredder is still a hobgoblin, and can be very cruel towards those he views to be beneath him. He is downright ruthless when perusing his goals. He understands that no matter how close he becomes to the Dragonmarked, he will never quite be their equal, and this sense of inferiority drives him to advance in status within House Lyrandar. He would not be opposed to 'removing' several members of house leadership who regularly flaunt their superiority over him.

Atil: Barbarian Lizardfolk

Atil was a mercenary from Q'barra. He fought for Cyre in the last war, but retains no loyalty to them. After the war ended, he found work with House Lyrandar guarding ships and airships.

While we await the remaining characters to be posted, we'll do some quick pregame scenes.

The Hearth and Harbor Tavern

Above the City of Sharn, there is a floating district known as the Skyway. Magewrights provide 24 hour levitation access to this artificial part of the city, which contains the finest shopping, dining, and theaters in the city. The Skyway dominated the view from the Hearth and Harbor, an inn and tavern among the highest towers at the base of the airship berth. Ornate darkwood beams framing the small pane-glass windows gave the tavern a feeling of traditional warmth.

Although the tower in which it resides is owned by House Lyrandar, the coat of arms above the taps bears the Blink Dog of House Ghallanda. The barkeep no doubt bore the Mark of Hospitality, and proudly boasted that all of their beer was brewed right here, to the finest standards of their house. Tasting it, you could believe them.

An upper balcony floor overlooks the main dining area and shares the view of the Skyway. A few book cases, a pair of pool tables, and a card table dominated this floor, providing a place for local employees of House Lyrandar to relax and be social.

Dullahan found himself here, his head for now firmly affixed as he engaged in a game of Bridge, partnered with a half-elf helmsman against a Gnomish sending-stone operator and Stella d'Vadalis. The teams were evenly matched, with neither Stella nor the helmsman being all that great at the game.

The doorbell rang as another patron entered. Atil looked around, spying an inviting nod from the barkeep, and an all too familiar figure. He and Dullahan had met once, in the war. They'd worked together on the liberation of a Cyran city some six months before the end of the war.

A Dojo in the Cogs

As far from the upper towers as one could travel without leaving Sharn behind, in a maze of twisting alleys, abandoned ruins, foundries and industrial sites, in a forgotten slum where the Watch did not bother to venture, lay a humble dojo. Affiliated with the Church of the Silver Flame, this dojo provides for the protection of the area. It is a humble dojo, but a beloved one, that finds itself the center of it's own community.

Today, it was sending out a war party. Inquisitives had tracked a Cult of the Dragon Below to this part of the cogs, and tonight, they would attempt a summoning, bringing a dread aberration into the city of Sharn.

Brother Jonhathan Was among the elite students being addressed by the Abbot, receiving this briefing. Soon enough, it was done.

A Ruined Slumhouse Beneath Sharn

Moments ago, Sormias Velcrosse had been examining a ley line nexus on a faraway world. No news of the Last War had ever reached her, not her people. No sign of the Cult of the Dragon Below, no Warriors of the Silver Flame. Her world was one with it's own strange magics, it's own conflicts among it's own gods, and it's own factions and power. It was a place very much unlike Eberron, and suddenly, it was gone.

In it's place, Sormias saw, was a strange and dark room. Robed cultists chanted among twisted shards of sharp crystal, who's red glow was slowly fading. The lead figure spoke.

"It is done. Behold, an aberration of the far realms. Behold, a true servant of the Dragon Below!"

A deafening silence followed, as all turned to Sormias.

"Mm... two no trump." Dullahan said, before glancing over when he heard the door chime. He'd lift a hand when he saw Atil, recognizing the little lizard. Afterwords he'd look back, glancing over the others at the table. A good day, a good bit of company... a good game too, evenly matched ones were far more entertaining than if he just won without effort.

Brother Jonathan raised a hand to the height of his waist and opened it with palm facing up. "Ignite." The word was spoken in an even tone. A hand sized flame appeared over his palm and began to emit Silver light. "Should we knock?" He asked the other students politely.

Atil looked forward, side of perception scanning the room as he walked, without ever turning his head, a skill he learned in the battlefield, since he often had to see more than what was in front of him, without taking his eyes off his goal. He moved steadily and calmly forward, reaching the stool in front of the bar, and after pulling a gold coin from the pouch attached to the shaft of his great axe.
Strong Ale. Meat, if you have it. And work, or at least the direction to it.” His voice was deep and raspy, clipping through sharp teeth, as his tongue slipped through their gaps.

It appears that Stella had very many high-valued spades. Winning a majority of the tricks, she secures the deal and the game. She glances over at Atil, silent for now, before starting to put her cards back into a stack. "I did not anticipate that outcome."

Dullahan chuckles softly, starting to collect his cards and shuffle them again. "I admit, I didn't either. You're learning quick Stella. That or you're just quite lucky. Either way, it was a fun round."
