The wagon has animals to pull it starting out, so maybe a 'p' or an 'i' designation could have the animals bring the wagon somewhere else. It would speed up stockpiling.

Maybe, the wagon can go wherever the trade depot is built.

Actual vehicles will come in ~18 years. That includes improved wagons.

Anyway, as for the suggestion itself, it feels like one of those things that should be in the game already but for some reason isn't.
IIRC, the wagon that the player starts with in fortress mode is a "building"(it can be deconstructed) whereas the wagons that the merchants use are "creatures" with the [EQUIPMENT_WAGON] tag.
This is likely the reason for the starting wagon's immobility. The only real solution/workaround right now would be to make that wagon move is to either turn it into the wagon "creature" when the player gives the order to move it or give the player the wagon "creature" at the start of the game. The merchants with their wagon "creatures" seem perfectly fine stopping, off-loading their stuff and loading it back onto the wagon.

i have no idea if either of these solutions are feasible nor what kinds of bugs it would produce.

Barring a hack or workaround to make starting wagons moveable, we might actually have to wait for proper vehicles to be implemented to have this feature.
(i have no idea if i got all the details of wagon-mechanics correct or not because i play fortress mode very little compared to adventure mode. so feel free to correct me if i got something wrong.)

Pretty sure Starting Scenarios will address this. You'll probably be able to start an embark from adventure mode.

Aren't minecarts vehicles? Can the wagon at least be modded to be a minecart and still hold all the embark goods so the dwarves will only need to dig tracks to get it somewhere else? That seems highly dwarfy for dwarves to use minecarts instead of wagons. Hopefully the wagon can be modded like this for now, but later on when animals will be able to pull things, dwarves will be using minecarts as a civ feature instead of wagons.

This could probably be implemented without excessive difficulty.  It could probably be done with a DFhack script, actually, since most of the code already exists (certainly no harder than spawning creatures).  You'd just need to:

1. Move the animals to the positions near the wagon

2. Create a new wagon creature while destroying the wagon building, and moving all items into it (merchants can create a new wagon creature)

3. Have the wagon path to the designated location (just like merchants)

4. Re-create the wagon building while destroying the creature

The only reason not to is because there's not really a lot of need for it, moving everything from the wagon doesn't take that long.  If Toady would implement the ability to create new wagons, he might as well add the ability to send off caravans from player-controlled sites for trade or even to start new fortresses.

No. Modding can't do everything.
