Melting Metal Blocks
« on: September 18, 2018, 05:24:12 pm »

According to the wiki, "Metal blocks can't be used for metalsmith's forge jobs but can be melted down at a smelter." (emphasis original)

When I try to mark some native silver blocks for melting through the Stocks menu, pressing 'm' does nothing. When I view the silver blocks with 'k', there is no option for melting. Is the wiki wrong? Or am I missing something?

After you mark an item to be melted,  you have to select "melt an object" at a smelter.

Native silver is an ore, e.g. rock - not a metal. I'm pretty sure that kind of blocks can't be smelted.

Thanks, Sver; I think that must be the problem. If anyone can confirm that they have melted other metals (not ores), that would seal the case.

Melting metal blocks works. As Sver said, native silver counts as rock. You can make statue of it (by mason, not by metalcrafter) and you won't be able to melt it. But a statue made of silver (from bars) melts just fine.

In the past, native silver used to be treated as metal, iirc, but that caused some funny bugs. But you can still edit it to use metal template instead of stone one - no idea if it'll work as desired, though.
