HOw does the search option work in stockpiles?

I hit z then stockpiles and tab for search the s , type in what I want to search for and nothing happens. Please help looking though the whole list is a bummer lol...
P.S. using LNP just FYI...

I suspect you are referring to the z-status *stocks* screen, not "stockpiles".

When searching in the "standard view" stocks screen, the results are only shown for the currently-selected category. Searching for "plump" won't display your plump helmets unless you select the "plants" category.

To search everything regardless of category, use the "enhanced view" option.

How do I know what category is selected and how do I change said category? Can you please explain how I would do a search for say rock mugs or anything for that matter?

The category in focus is the one the cursor is standing on. Moving up and down the list select different categories. The "enhanced view" is a DFHack addition, but since you're using the LNP we'll assume you haven't disabled it. If so, the screen shows what the key binding is, but it defaults to 'e', if I remember correctly (it's the option in red [indicating it's not vanilla DF]).
