Mall Fight: The Inferno - Chapter 0: Where There's Smoke
« on: September 24, 2018, 08:36:31 pm »

Five years after the Megamall incident in downtown Toronto, the site is bulldozed, excavated, practically obliterated. No visual traces of the building remain. A new facility is being built, but after the reputation garnered by what once was, it’s not a mall. It’s not a market. It’s definitely not a mart.

No, instead, what we find ourselves seeing on a frigid November evening, is The Inferno. A fitting name for would soon occur within its walls, but less so to mere onlookers. A one-floor, albeit rather wide, circular building, painted a dull-looking eggshell white. No windows to speak of. No doors to speak of. Construction vehicles litter the immediate grounds like toys scattered around a giant child’s bedroom floor. The only real ways one could definitively call this blank slate by its name would be to either spot the crane halfway through picking up the nameplate from the ground, or to read the ridiculously opaque contract sitting unread in an overstuffed filing system in the mayor’s desk.

Despite the signs pointing to an overly ambitious project, abandoned for whatever reason, be it budget, time, or lack of willing workers, there’s an energy radiating from the place. It spurs curiosity, draws people to the grounds. Every week or so, people make attempts to find an entrance, and turn to social media when those plans fall through. Thrill seekers post videos of their freerunning stunts on the grounds to their Snapchat stories. Amateur ghost hunters upload their theories of goat demons or a phantom luchador scaring off workers to their Youtube channels. Reactionaries complain loudly on Twitter and Facebook about the amount of space being taken up, and the uselessness of the local government in relation to it. Even local hipsters talk about shopping at “the most exclusive, underground boutiques” on MySpace or whatever the hell they use these days.

Which all makes the anonymous announcement about The Inferno opening its “doors” not suspicious in the slightest.

Nobody really makes any note of the sketchy banner ads, the craigslist ads, the new “Inferno-Verse” wiki. After all, if all of the information is coming from agressively unreliable sources, why even risk clicking on any of it?

But some people do click on it.

And some people find things.

Information. An announcement. A website.

Everything leading to three things:

A Date: November 26th
A Time: 11PM, or 23:00 if you’re a douchebag
A Place: Outside the southernmost point of The Inferno. Bring nothing.

Once again, sketchy as all hell.

But as we watch from across the river, we see a small crowd. Roughly 12...maybe 15 people gather, huddled under he dim glow of the streetlights several meters away. We see very little chatting, as these are serious people. They know something we don’t.

And yet, they still don’t know the whole story.

We check our watches, our phones, waiting for the second to arrive.

10:58.

10:59

We look back to the mysterious building, to see 12 to 15 people no longer obscuring the drab white wall. The crowd is gone.

Dispersed? Kidnapped? Vanished into thin air? We across the river do not know.

But you.

You are one of those people.

And this is not our story.

This is your story.

Name: Lulu Amaru
Appearance: Lulu stands at a perfectly average human height. That's about the only average thing about her. Her clothes are bizarre and undulate as she walks, still somehow covering her whole body, and changing color depending on the presence or lack of particles she calls "Nimilitons", but then explains that they won't exist for another few centuries, before immediately backpedaling and claiming that "Nimilitons exist right now, I'm so not from the future". She also doesn't wear shoes. What a weirdo.
Background: Lulu Amaru is TOTALLY not a spaceborne human time traveling from the future. She is DEFINITELY not just here for shits and giggles. These futuristic-y looking clothes? They're OBVIOUSLY the latest fashion, and not from the future. Why do you ask?
Skills: Lulu's a fairly likeable person - and most people who knew her would agree. Those few people who would disagree would happen to know she's surprisingly talented in torture.
Faults: Lulu can't tell a lie. It's not that she doesn't try, she just really, REALLY sucks at it. She's also pretty easy to upset if she doesn't get her way.
Inventory: Lulu also showed up with a pair of calipers, surgical scissors, and a small bag of sewing needles. No thread. Just needles.

Hm. Depends on how supernatural you mean.

You're haunted by the ghost of your shitty neighbor Ron but his hold on the material plane isn't great so he just sort of possesses you for a minute at a time to yell at dogs and kids? Yeah, sure, go right ahead.

You're legit just a vampire and want to suck the blood of everyone here? That might need some work.

Honestly for a lot of this beginning phase you can make what you want and I'll help tweak to make things work best. Speaking of which.

Name: Rex
Appearance: Rex is good dog, golden retriever !
Background: Rex is nap nap at master's house. But Rex wake up and feel weird. Like someone call Rex. But master asleep. Who call Rex? Rex don't know, but Rex go anyway. Inventory: Rex bring only squeaky toy.

WHAT A GOOD DOG! The good dog gets +1 to finding specific objects, and a +1 to...well, barking. Sadly, he'll get a -1 to diplomacy and perception-based stuff. But hey, not that it matters because he's SUCH A GOOD BOY!!!

Name: John Smith
Appearance: A filthy unkempt old man, that reeks of filth and alcohol.
Background: He's been homeless for as long as he can remember, living on the street, scrounging for food in dumpsters, and begging for money to buy more alcohol, its pretty much all he's ever known.
Skills: Jury Rigging, Urban Survival
Faults: Alcoholic, Insane
Inventory: Bottle of Rum, Screwdriver
I'm intrigued to find out why he's here. John will get a +2 to crafting, but a -2 to diplomacy because hoo boy that's a rough combination of faults.

Definitely not from the future, and definitely not likely to be considered just as homeless and insane as John. +1 to Diplomacy, +1 to Intimidation, -1 to all Lying, and -1 to...honestly I'm not entirely sure what "East to upset" would translate well to for a negative modifier. Any ideas?

Maybe have it, so that whenever Lulu gets a 1, she also gets a -1 to her next roll because she is too frustrated to concentrate clearly.

+1 to Navigation to places that start with B and attacks with firearms of any kind! You may think "Wow that's a little overpowered."
But...Attack rolls less than or equal to 2 result in a NEW attack roll on an ally.

And a -1 to Diplomacy but eh that's not the fun part.

Also I'm going to pick out the top 6 on Thursday, around this time!

This is...a very diplomacy-poor crowd so far.

Name : John Jackson
Appearance : noir detective in grey trenchcoat and grey fedora
Background : police detective
Skills : investigating, noir monologues, shooting bad things, smoking, drinking, noiring around.
Faults : hiding flask with whiskey in his fedora, beating italian detainees too much, rudeness, noir cynism.
Inventory : noir 38 revolver, 2 ammo cylinders, flask with whiskey, Zippo lighter, pack of cigarettes. brass knuckles

+1 Attack boost against criminals, but a -1 to diplomacy. Further -1 for non-violent actions against Italians.

Name : Spy
Appearance : http://hbimg.b0.upaiyun.com/411b7d636f275f57a3090b7fd1701ae3febcc57e9dcb0-k7sJb1
Background : An unknown man born in an unknown region of France and residing in an unknown location with only one known connection outside of pure business. The Spy is a skilled assassin and... well, spy, and a force to be reckoned with.
Skills : Assassination, espionage
Faults : Physically un-fit for direct confrontation, Get's overconfident
Inventory : Sharp Dresser(it is attached to the suit, thus it is part of my clothes, no?), enthusiasts timepiece(it is but a watch, however practical.)

It was either this, or Tiny Tina from Borderlands. I may submit her anyway later but I figured that we've already got enough negative diplomacy characters. The bits in parentheses are in character 'justifications', because I feel like the Spy is the kind of person who would bend the rules as far as he can without actually taking the risk of breaking them.
