Design Phase

Dreadmonks
Quote
Fear is the mind-killer. It is known. The strongest armour, the sharpest blade, the tallest castle- none of them can help you if you are too terrified to fight. It may leave its victims standing, but fear can assuredly take down foes that no mundane means could. It behoves us, then, to exploit this to the fullest.
A new wing of the Chanter's Sanctuary will be constructed- the architecture dark and foreboding in appearance-, wherein will train a new class of chanter. Whilst they will also be educated in the art of the blade, that is not where their strength will lie. Where Blademonks study cutting, Dreadmonks shall study fear. Aspirants will be forced to face their own deepest fears, whilst being exposed to (a weak) Reinforcement of Fear chant, night after night until they either break (resulting in expulsion), or learn to embrace fear, to welcome it, until fear loses all power over them, whilst an instinctual understanding of the emotion remains burned into their minds. Those who make it through will then learn what others fear, and how to exploit those fears. They will study how people react- what kinds of fear will cause a person to be paralysed with shock, what kinds result in them fleeing in terror, and what kinds activate the 'fight' part of fight-or-flight. And, of course, they will learn the Reinforcement of Fear chant, until they understand its every nuance, and can use it to instil anything from mild goosebumps to a total mental breakdown.
A fully trained Dreadmonk will have one last task before they can be deployed in battle; to carve themselves a mask. Each individual will know exactly what horrifying visage they should adopt to cause maximum distress; their mask, carved from dark hardwood, painted a glossy black, should by itself have such a distressing demonic appearance that even without any magical assistance it could cause an enemy soldier to turn tail. It shall augment an outfit consisting of chainmail (stained black), a Flamequencher Cloak (stained black, tattered, avec deep hood), and a Moonlight Sabre (stained black if possible).
The end result is a warrior for whom fear is an old friend, and trivial things such as life-threatening danger cause not even a twitch of concern. They may serve as assassins, stalking through the night, picking off members of a patrol until those remaining are too scared to fight on- using powerful Reinforcement of Fear chants against particularly stubborn targets. In pitched battle, they can either go unmasked, using their knowledge of fear to detect and quell it amongst our soldiers, or move en-masked to target enemy elites and commanders, letting them get a good look at their demonic visage whilst they chant at them.

Normal: 4

The new structure added to the Chanter’s sanctuary this year has become known as the Tower of Dread. Even if it is wide and squat by the standards of most towers, it looms no less ominously. Too large doors await any who would enter, themselves overshadowed by imposing stone arches held aloft by pillars attached to each other. Into the pillars, grotesque faces have been carved that seem to stare into the eyes of all those who look upon them. Daring to open the doors only unleashes the thick stench of terror emanating from within.

The disciples attempting to become Dreadmonks train in windowless rooms, lit only by candle flame. Statues carved of wood throw haunting shadows before the cavorting flame. Yet these terrors of the imagination are but preparation to face the chants of their teachers. From their training rooms they travel to the paramount crest; the top of the tower at midday when the world shows its brightest and kindest face. It is there that the baleful green fire of fear is delivered unto them and there that they face its judgement.

As they master the ability to step forward in the face of fear, they unlock within themselves a berserk strength. Those monks who follow the berserk way enter the battlefield unmasked to strengthen the resolve of their own forces and inspire others with a suicidal fatalism.
Those who rid themselves entirely of their own fears follow the calm way and carve masks with which to hide their emotionless appearance. They light their mask with the green fire of the chant creating a terrifying visage that looms ever larger in the eyes of their victims.

Runic System Experiment (Geomancy): Form(Wood), Ward(Shadow), Attack(Fire)
New spell discovered: Blooming Shadow turns to ash.
An untouchable flower grows out of the spell circle. As it blooms the black petals grow in size to surround the immediate area with darkness. Those within this darkness are not blinded by it, though they can feel it hiding them from sight. Those beyond its range can only see black petals obscuring the area. Chants such as our Reinforcement of Fear cannot target anyone within the Blooming Shadows as they require the ability to see the target to function.

The caster can maintain this state of darkness for as long as they maintain concentration. Once they allow the spell to continue the darkness created will briefly blaze with light and heat on the inside as the petals wither to ash and disappear.

We believe the final effect is a result of a fizzle on the last Rune.

This spell is compatible with Scroll creation.
No existing Alchemy recipes can activate this spell.
Our chanters presently lack enough skill with the Ward Meaning to chant this spell.

Hmm. So, we now have two revisions, yet not much to use them for. Any ideas, anyone?

E: Alright, well, we can create a Scroll (an actual Scroll, not a Record we mistakenly called a Scroll) of Blooming Shadow. We could make it Medium strength and it would be Expensive, at 4 Mana (we have discounts on two of the three runes)... or, if we make the last rune Weak, it would cost 3 Mana, dropping to 2 if we increase our knowledge of the Ward meaning. Since the last rune causes the fizzle effect which we don't want, making it weaker would be an upside, not a downside.

Quote
Scroll of Blooming Shadow:
A slightly nicer item than the mass-produced Scroll of Fear, the Scroll of Blooming Shadow is painted on a piece of leather that can be rolled up and carried around in a wooden tube. The first two runes are Medium strength, whilst the third (Attack(Fire)) is Weak. When unrolled, the circle is [as large as is feasible], and can be staked to the ground using wooden pegs (or simply weighed down with rocks), ready to be activated by the caster.
The primary use for these Scrolls will be to obscure squads of archers from view.

I don't know what to do for our other revision. Improved bows?

E2: I am somewhat reluctant to do a 'cheap' piece of armour, since in two turns chainmail will be Cheap, but I can't think of anything better, and it would help stem the bleeding a little.

Quote
Moonlight Breastplate:
A very simple improvement to the average footsoldier's survivability, this Moonlight Breastplate is more or less just a thin plate of metal that can be strapped over the top of padded armour (or chainmail). As the name suggests, it has been quenched in (weak) EEFE, giving it more resilience than common iron. It does not cover the back, for cost reasons- it is designed to be Cheap even with our currently limited supplies of metal.

Anyway, unless anyone has any better ideas, I'm going to vote for these two.

E3: So, Rockeater suggested an alternative- Moonlight Chainmail. It would be Expensive for now, but it will help our elite troops immediately, and should hopefully become Cheap in two turns.

Quote
Moonlight Chainmail:
A rather simple upgrade to our ordinary chainmail, in which the metal is quenched in (weak) Earth Elemental's Fortifying Elixir to strengthen it. This should not require more metal to produce, although the labour required to produce it may be increased.

Revision Phase

Scroll of Blooming Shadow
Quote
A slightly nicer item than the mass-produced Scroll of Fear, the Scroll of Blooming Shadow is painted on a piece of leather that can be rolled up and carried around in a wooden tube. The first two runes are Medium strength, whilst the third (Attack(Fire)) is Weak. The primary use for these Scrolls will be to obscure squads of archers from view.

Normal: 3

These leather scrolls are easy to carry, but a little awkward to unroll and weigh down. After activation, the scroll burns with heatless green flame and withers to dust. As the green fire spreads into a runic circle the scroll bearer may draw on it’s magic. Within the blooming darkness, the caster and their allies are illuminated by green flame and there are those who claim to hear the whispers of dead men. From without all that can be seen is darkness.
Expensive (Land 1, Mana 3)

Moonlight Chainmail
Quote
A rather simple upgrade to our ordinary chainmail, in which the metal is quenched in (weak) Earth Elemental's Fortifying Elixir to strengthen it. This should not require more metal to produce, although the labour required to produce it may be increased.

Easy: 5+1

Thanks to organised deployment of the Earth Elemental’s Fortifying Elixir to our forces, Moonlight Chainmail has replaced chainmail in use by our officers and elites. Many are comforted by the white armour they wear beneath their black cloaks. This has made it a little easier to identify our champions from the black uniforms of our soldiery.
Expensive (Land 2, Ore 2, Mana 2)

It is now Spring, Turn 4 Battle Phase
We look to the skies and curse our enemies for clouds gather unnaturally above us soaking our lands with relentless rain. In the mountains, mudslides have become more common and in the hills, the endless downpour is a misery to be endured. In the forest and jungle; the canopy provides some shelter as the land absorbs the rain. The lands of Loji are clear and mostly cloudless. Select two lanes to push and the lane to deploy your hero to.

We should probably actually put some votes down here. Which two lanes does everyone else think we should try pushing this time? We've got new armor and new visual cover, so where would that be more advantageous to show off?

We've basically agreed not to attack DGR for the next three turns, so we're bought into attacking the Hills and Jungle.

I'll ask Talion to what degree we need to specify tactics for the use of the new scrolls. I assume our commanders can figure it out by themselves, but you never know.

By default I’ll assume you want them used to obscure your archers.
So that's fine.
The only question, then, is where to deploy Lady Adiva. I'm going to say the Hills, since I feel like between the Scroll of Blooming Shadow and the Dreadmonks, we should be able to make progress in the Jungle (unless Loji has developed tech specifically to boost their performance there).

Battle Phase

We don’t know what dread secret the forces of Loji discovered that let them manipulate the weather thus. The sheer scale they are operating on boggles the mind. All we can be sure of is that absent such a discovery we must prepare our forces for the extremes of weather now at their beck and call.
The new barbed crossbow bolts have taken a toll on our forces. Those struck are condemned to suffer the fire of their wound until they can be removed, many didn’t survive to have the bolt extracted. More died in the extraction. This new terror weapon of theirs is making formation fighting a difficult endeavor and with them making a clear switch away from engaging in close combat the pikemen are looking increasingly antiquated. We need a better way to inflict damage from afar or else a means to strengthen our own forces against their fire and storm.

Lady Adiva Shrivastava was one of those wounded in battle. She has suffered horrible and disfiguring burns, but survives for now. She will not be able to fight next season.

So I'm going to suggest we try Alchemy, because in the discord there's been the opinion we should do another alchemy recipie now so we have the design phase to do something with whatever we mix up, and more specifically I'm going to suggest this recipe.

Attack (Fire), Shape (Earth) Control (Shadow)

We haven't done any Alchemy with shadows yet, nor have we used the Shape or Control Meanings with Alchemy. Personally I'm kinda hoping for something explosive, but either way it should be educational and I want to try leveraging our more advanced elements more now that we have them.
