"I agree, the main difference here is that, on this occasion, we have been invited." Ahead, on the road, Grae and his companions spotted an oncoming group. Grae continued only a few more steps before holding out an arm, a signal for his fighters to stop. "...Battle lines. But don't be obvious about it." The group waited on the road as a group of several laguz approached them on the road, also drawing to a halt.

A small, wirey man with green hair and cat ears stepped forward, the apparent leader. He addressed Grae. "Nice scar."

"Thank you. It's one of my favorites." Grae's tone was level, neutral, and, to his subordinates, clearly unamused.

The Laguz's slight smile grew wider. "One man with a scarred eye and six warriors. You must be Grae Steelhart. Am I right?"

"...You are. Do you have some business with me? I'm afraid I'm currently under contract, and in something of a hurry." This wasn't technically true. Steelhart and his mercenaries would only be under contract after discussing terms with the King.

"Oh, I'm well aware! We're... well, we're aware of the King's call for human mercenaries." Though most of the Laguz remained where they were, this Laguz and a few of his companions stepped forward. "You see, King Himos isn't entirely confident in your abilities. And who can blame him? You are, as they say, only human." His smile grew wider still, and became decidedly predatory. "And, well, he thought to have us make sure that you would not be wasting his time."

In spite of the obvious air of hostility, Grae remained relaxed. "And how would you propose to determine that?"

"Don't be coy. And don't worry, we won't try to kill you." With no further warning to be made, the man and his advance team suddenly changed into beasts. Hackles raised and fangs bared, they began to advance toward the mercenaries.

As the change took place, Grae's sword was out. "Mercenaries! Extend the same courtesy to the Laguz that they extend to us! Milos, cover Alys!"

The second the Laguz showed up, Milos froze in place, shaking all over, though it was obvious he was making an effort to stop shaking, reducing his shaking to his legs. Regardless, he could not do anything but stare in fear of the beast as he appeared to Grae.

"..."

He very nearly panicked when they were challenged to a fight, but Grae's orders managed to calm him down a tad.

"I-... I-I'm on it, s-sir..."

He was definitely going to try to avoid those things as far as possible... though the birds he could try to take on if he could hit them. For now...

Claire frowned almost imperceptibly. She had never liked arrogance, and she liked it even less coming from a laguz who apparently thought he was superior just by his nature alone. Typical of a Sampian... but she pushed these thoughts aside.

If they spoke to Steelhart like that, they underestimated him. And they were all Steelhart mercenaries.

"... We can do this." Again she didn't know if she was speaking to everyone, anyone, or just to herself - but together, they would prove themselves. There was no doubt in her heart.

She moved with the others, tome in hand. As she drew on the power within it and within herself, the air around her seemed to shift, wind swirling around her, picking at her robes and her hair.

25-9, Arcane Barrier using Wind.

In Iris's opinion, this was not a good day. After far too long traveling down this path with delusions of grandeur in what could be charitably called subpar weather, they now have to deal with this colossal waste of time. What's the point of calling in mercenaries if you're so unsure of their skill you force them to face a test before even giving them the job?

Vanessa smiled brightly and performed a deep bow, finally after all of this walking in the rain she would be able to do something interesting.

"Well, prepare to be amazed. We'll put on a show you cannot believe."

She paused for a moment looking around to see where the rest of her companions had gone, noticing that she was quickly being left behind she hurried after them. As she ran she opened up her tome, getting ready to unleash the light show.

Move to 25,10. Designated enemies for this combat are beasts.

Alys kinda wanted to panic now. Laguz, jumping her party... She thought of how her mother was said to have died when she went missing. But there was no time for that on a battlefield, she reminded herself... She took deep breaths, like she had been taught by her old master - The more centered you were, the easier it was to heal the wounded. Someone told her to get out of the way, so she did, stepping more out of the reach of the beasts in front of her.
Alys, to 25,8.

"Time to show these furballs who's boss! But first, a tactical retreat. We aren't running away, promise!" Clover grinned a bit as she'd rush south with the rest of her companions, drawing her dagger along the way.

Claire fell back to the rear, almost reluctant. As her barrier continued swirling lightly around her, teasing the pages of her tome, she sent a gust of wind past Iris and brought it scything down.

Vanessa leapt into action, running at a break neck pace until she reached the top of the hill. She looked around, deciding that this would be the perfect stage for the spectacle that was about to occur. She held forth her book and with an overly dramatic flourish and some entirely unnecessary magic incantations, she formed pure light into the shape of a bird. There was a pause for dramatic effect and then the bird swooped down and collided with the tiger below her.

The tigers were starting to get closer, and as a result, Milos started to back away into the cover of everyone... but then stopped. Taking a deep breath, he was able to try and calm himself... they were scary, but he had a duty to uphold; he had to cover Alys... and if he couldn't do it by himself, he'd have to help others so that his job could be done!

"D-Don't give up! I believe in you all...!"

Milos moves to 25-10 and performs for Claire and Vanessa.

Another small smile for Milos, and partly because of Vanessa's attack, too. The way Vanessa fought fit her in a way that just seemed right.

Claire hesitated only briefly before sending another attack over the hills.

It was true that this was putting on a show, proving themselves to their would-be employer. It was true that their opponents had picked this fight. And neither side was looking to kill - but she was still aware that she was causing them pain.
