Wait. Friht. Frihtsdaughter. Segdoress. Frihtsfolk.
Heh. Heheh. Heheheheh, ha, ha, haha, hahahaha, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! GENIUS! I can't say I expected that at all. Of course I can't act on this knowledge, but it is still quite hilarious to me. Wish I thought of that.

Namif observed the men standing before him. From what he could tell they were from the same people, wearing the same silk clothes. Clearly quite rich. And quite likely to be worshippers of Segdoress or one of her other forms. Hmmm... it was unlikely they were here to declare war for any reason, and being so rich... likely here to learn more information about the nearby tribes and establish some sort of trade deal. Luckily for them, the Plefir just so happened to be in need of money, and had recently uncovered a vein of beautiful rocks. Of course, there was also the possibility their version of Segdoress focused more on the lies and intrique, but if that was the case... well, Namif was confident he could brute force his way through that particular problem. Traders are not well known for their fighting prowess, and he was doubtful that they had access to iron. Now to hope that communication would go better. "Welcome to my home. I am Namif, chieftain of the Plefir. State your name and your purpose for being here."

Research Mining. While the Plefir were likely one of the only tribes with access to Iron, the rate at which said iron was being extracted from the mountains was simply not enough. While Namif highly doubted he would ever trade iron away to another tribe, for the basic reason of the safety of his own tribe, the more iron was mined the more veins of other resources would surely be found. Therefore, the Plefir needed to find a way to mine faster or more efficiently.

Have an emissary, along with 4 guards, travel to the moon-worshipping tribe to gather more information about them. Make sure the emissary memorizes as much about the tribe as possible, including style, how they live, their army, their language etc. If Namif was to effectively lead his tribe to glory, he needed information. And the best way to gather information was to send a guarded emissary to investigate and communicate with the tribe he wanted information on. He would gather information on the beast riding tribe at a later date, if necessary.

Continue fostering good relations with the nearby family groups. The best way to integrate people into the Plefir was to do so peacefully. Violent integration would only lead to war, anger, and maybe even rebellion if the hatred grows too much for the occupying tribe to contain. While it was certainly possible to violently integrate a tribe successfully, It required far more effort than peaceful integration. Therefore, land that you wish to become your tribe's land should always have good relations with your tribe. Hm, perhaps a he could create a set of rules to limit what future chiefs could and could not do? No, he would likely be expected to follow those rules himself, limiting him too much. Hmmm...

The Carazan –

Threia had crept out in the night to be alone, and away from everything. Today the eastern sailing party had finally returned, and their report disturbed her immensely: a strange, inhuman people who treated the lives of their own as nothing, who made their weapons with deadly poison, and who gave away that poison carelessly, as if it were of no account. They had not been hostile, but why should they be? The Carazan couldn't fight poisons. She had told the group to keep the news to themselves, but between the scouts and the sailors there were far too many mouths to silence. Tonight she needed the gods more than ever.

Behind the temple building itself stretched a crag of bare rock where her people sometimes left offerings. Threia had brought a portion of dried tullyfish: the Sea Father's gift felt appropriate to beseech her human father's health; and she squatted silently waiting for an answer from her gods.

She heard a noise, but it was hardly divine. Someone had followed her to the rocks, someone who must have lost her thanks to her customary hunter's stillness, someone who was just coming right there...

It turned out to be a child she didn't recognize. As she lunged scraps of fish scattered at his feet. They stared at each other, Threia holding the boys arm with one hand, the other ready to strike.

She took stock of his his skinny legs and hollow cheeks, pale in the moonlight. She lowered her fist. "I'm sorry." The boy gaped. "You've dropped your fish. Let me help you."

The frightened boy managed to squeak, "It's not mine. I'll put it back, I promise."

"Nonsense," she replied. She hadn't let go of him, she didn't want him to bolt without taking his food. "People gave these fish to Father Sea, so they belong to the gods now, don't they?"

The boy nodded, clearly unsure where she was going with this.

"Well, Obali in turn gives us His tullyfish to eat. I don't see why it should be any different just because the fish are up here instead of down there." She picked up her own offering, a nice fat piece, and held it out to him.

"That doesn't sound like something the priests would say," stammered the incredulous boy.

"It sounds exactly like something my father would say." She even giggled. How good it felt. "He was a fisherman, and he told me all the stories about the gods, so I'd say he should know what he's talking about." She grinned.

The boy took her fish, and picked up a few of the other scattered pieces, then scurried away. Threia kept grinning. The gifts of the gods are for us to use. To put all of them to use...

* * * * *

-Threia will burn the Medicinal Herbs, as prescribed, to cure Forne.
-An escorted delegation (100 army) will be sent to the turtle-sailors with 1 unit of Tullyfish as a friendship gift and 2 wealth with which to trade.
-Inspired by the white algae, Threia will talk to the fishermen and direct Research into the Tullyfish Shoals to learn more about marine species other than the Tullyfish and whether they might have their own usefulness.

Conditional: -if the Herbs turn out to be immediately (and positively) effective, Threia will send the same band of 50 to seek out that family group and give them 1 Wealth as a reciprocal gift.

Wrote about what happened between the First Tribe splitting off from the nomads and the arrival of the Second Tribe.

Spoiler: The One Tribe (click to show/hide)
Removed the Minor Gods part of the Pantheon for now, as the Plefir have a lot of minor gods and the minor god mythology is rather separate from the mythology of the Primaries and Imvton.

Ariella was surprised by the results of the sacrifice. While she expecting food from hunting to go up, which it certainty did especially with the new knowledge of proper trapping, she didn't expect herself to be effected let alone in this way. She certainty never heard of any stories of Fanw doing this to anyone before, but maybe this was a first time thing as she couldn't come up with any answer as to how this happened other than it being a result of the sacrifice. Needless to say she was going to take things a bit easy for now, she'd still do some hunts of course but not ones that lasted all day as she usually went on before she was blessed with a child quite literally. Besides, it would give her an opportunity to govern more and spend more time near the runestones and learn from their wisdom.

She'd find however that it wouldn't take long for her to have a new decision, a trader offering wealth for a few of the live catches of reindeer that the new traps managed to catch. On one hand, the wealth would be quite useful and could fund the construction of a hunting cabin or two to better organize hunts and the animals they bring back from successful hunts, however on the other the reindeer could be useful and after the sacrifice of twenty deer last year, the clans might not be too thrilled to hear of more potential food sent away, even if they might get a surplus from this year. So, she would politely tell the trader and emissary that at this moment in time, the reindeer aren't for sale.

After this, she would decide to go through with the construction of a proper hunting cabin using the wealth that they currently had as it would surely pay back its worth in weight of furs and food, both due to the traditional hunters with bow and arrow and thanks to those whom set up traps.

However, after giving this order, Ariella would set another order to be met, sending out one hundred people out into the wilds to search for others like the trader who apparently came from the south east. They would split this one hundred into groups of twenty five each, one sent to the south east, one to the south west, one to the north east, and one to the north west. They are to be careful of course, and use their hunting skills to stay out of sight if the need arises, but hopefully everything would go smoothly for them.

Leader: Forne Kio (58) (regn. Threia Forne)

I had originally meant that Threia's surname would be her mother's rather than her father's, BUT after consideration I really do like this better. Using a simpler patronym-only convention is nicer for the imaginary ethnography that I'm inventing. Keep it like that, please. I'll even go back and edit my earlier guide. (This still means her un-fathered son is out of luck; legally, all fathers are husbands and only husbands.) (I've picked out a preferred name in case the lad enters the story: Kio, after his great-grandfather.)

I don't think Ragnar knows this has been updated, that or he's ignoring it. He has been on the forums since the update, but he hasn't been on the forums for roughly a day now.

Edit: Looking at his profile, he seems to have periods where he's fairly active and then periods when he's completely inactive on the forums.

EDIT 2: In fact, the majority of his activity is on saturdays and sundays. Guess we have a good week in between updates to write lore on our tribes.

I wrote a bit of fluff about my tribe's pantheon. I don't know how much it contributes to the game plot, but it shows the kind of thing their myths & fables talk about. Curiously, it involves an enormous turtle in the south, yet it seems to predate contact with the Keepers of Nowhere. ;)

Ha, I love this! Myths like these have always been my favorite.

Waitlist Application

Name of Tribe: North Men
Color: Coral
Name of Ruler: Lu MireIce
Starting Resource: Behemoth Pyrenees
Main Diety: Pyres and Volcanous
Lore:

The Northmen have a long and tumultuous past. Long ago they belonged to a great tribe and were multitude. They lived long lives, fishing and hunting to sustain themselves, and knew not want. Then came the dark years. A dark cloud erupted from the earth, and a terrible dust rained down upon the earth. The fields had gone sour, and the crops withered from disease long before the harvest time. The forests had gone silent, the game left for distant pastures, and the river ran black, clogged with dank murk. The ancient tribesmen knew well which god had cursed them, Volcanous, the Ancient Fire. With little food, but resolve abound, the ancient tribe had but one option, confront the angry god.

In the years that followed, the weak were culled from the tribe as they journeyed far to the north. The journey was long, and full of hardships. Friends and family were lost as starvation, disease, and the elements laid claim to the weak. All hope seemed lost as the approached the distant volcano, many seasons journey from their tropical homeland. And upon seeing its grandeur, a cascade of molten rock, flowing from the mountain range, they truly abandoned hope.

It was in that autumn that the god Pyres appeared before them. They, the god of ice and winter, had once ruled over this land. Yet Volcanous had risen forth from deep within the earth, thawing the ice and creating a fertile volcanic swamp, much to the fury of Pyres. Pyres spent ages casting blizzard after blizzard upon the land, but could make no headway in refreezing the thawed earth. Alone the god could not reclaim these lands, but with the resolve of these travelers, perhaps he could retake some of his territory. And thus the Northmen made a bargain with the spiteful god. The god would gift them his children, giant dogs of pure snow and ice, so long as they slew the titan which dwelled within the fire mountain. Eager to gain the favor of the god, they accepted and readied themselves for war.

When the time came, the northmen mounted the Snow Beasts, and rode winter across the land. Behind them, a frost settled and the earth froze solid. Only upon reaching the fire mountain did the god's magic falter. With a massive eruption, the god Volcanous met them on the battlefield. For weeks the riders battled with the beast, and the land was drenched in blood. Only with the sacrifice of a brave soul, who rode into the heart of the volcano to pierce the god's heart, did the fighting finally end.

The rider, who's name has been lost to time, struck at the god's heart, but could not deliver a fatal blow. The fires of the volcano consumed him, and yet, he emerged from the volcano. His skin a pale white, but his hair, a fiery red. This hero called upon the god Pyres, and brokered a deal between the two gods. The lands would be split between the two gods, with half the year belonging to Volcanous, and half the year belonging to Pyres. The Northmen would remain in these lands eternal, and guard this agreement, so that the two gods could never betray the agreement.

After deliberation, the gods agreed, though Pyres was furious that his mortals had turned against him. Moments after agreeing, he withdrew his protection from the northmen. The snowbeasts thawed to reveal giant riding dogs beneath, and the mortal's snow white hair was tinted with fiery reds. The mortal hero, his protection gone, burned to death in the heart of the volcano. With his death, the place of the Northmen was solidified for time immemorial, as keepers of the seasons.

Lore/Pre next turn events to keep everyone occupied:

The Keepers of Nowhere & The Carazan

The Carazan sailing ships are sent off, carrying Tullyfish and a variety of other items. Lead by Arman Arman, a childhood mentor of Threia. An imposing man 40 summers old. Scars from a dozen species of sharks litter his arms and face, yet he is kind at heart.

The winds are formidable, and your ships arrive in a couple of weeks. You are hailed by the dark-skinned people of Nowhere Prime, the largest turtle village. There, Arman is hailed by Octavian.

The Plefir

A family-group has arrived at your court. They worship Sachnyss, their Goddess of Roses. They wish for your permission to build a shrine to her in your lands.

Llychlyn

Your pregnancy is getting along faster than you expected. Within months, your belly has become incredibly swollen, even painfully so. The baby's kicks feel sharp and painful, totally unlike other mothers describe them. The midwife guarantees you that the heartbeat of your unborn child is healthy, but she offers you a toxic brew to expunge the child if you so desire.

You are also plagued with dreams of great predators, creatures of Fanw. The dreams are becoming more and more vivid every night, and are littered with blood and gore.

Trade deals, shrines and demon babies oh my!

Give them permission to build a shrine, all gods and their many names are welcome in the Lesser Pantheon.

Some more information on the Lesser Pantheon: It is literally every other god that isn't one of the Primaries or the Great Gravekeeper. There's a lot of them, and the mythology around them centers on the constant conflict going on between so many gods. Of course, while the Plefir are all perfectly happy with this, some minor groups in the tribe, predominantly people from the Trileb Clan, believe the minor gods need more representation. Of course this hasn't led to any problems yet and it's such a small group, so there's no way they could truly affect anything yet.

Roboson's entry:
First thought: in b4 the North men show up in the far south :P
Second thought: I wonder if having two backstories featuring volcanoes makes that stuff more likely to happen in the future, too.

Family tree:
((1. Awesome :) Only, I think Threia's son's name is supposed to be Kio. kthx.))

((2. Is Arman Arman part of the same family that married Forne's older children, or just have the same name? ))

The Story:
((So, by the timeline we must be arriving after the battle against Azan Amber; and I've taken the risk of attributing heightened wariness to Glass's people in its aftermath. If you don't like it, simply chalk it up to misinterpretation on the character's part. I mean, Arman's warriors certainly wouldn't meet strangers without their weapons handy, either.))

Arman gazed at the minor flotilla of small-boats headed toward his ship. "Is this them?" he asked.

"I think so. Still not close enough to see if that island is one of the great turtles," replied Shaxa. She was short and a bit plump, not much of a warrior by most measures, but she had the keenest eyes among his scouts, plus she had been part of the original party to contact the turtle riders.

"I don't think it matters," Arman replied. "They're definitely hefting those harpoons."  It bothered him that these people in front of him had reacted with a good deal more alarm than that first report had led him to expect. He tersely gave the order to bring out a few of the furs and other large items to display, letting the strangers know they meant to trade rather than fight.

I wonder if we have enough to take home one of those small-boats, he thought as the two sides closed the distance. They seem sleeker and faster than the ones we build. Well, I won't waste Threia's gifts but we shall see.

A ship had appeared on the horizon, and not one of their own. Octavian has just been notified; many of the hunters had already gone out in their canoes to meet it. They were on justifiably edge after the recent battle, but from what Octavian could see, the ship was quite unlike what the Azan had.

It was not long after that Octavian’s canoe was also by the approaching vessel. “Everyone, stand down. These men are not the ones we fought against.” As he gave the order, the newcomers began to bring out furs and other goods. “They come to trade, like we do to others.”

Now, directing his voice to the men aboard the ship, he began to ask in the languages he knew: “Would you identify yourselves?”
