It was an interesting game, but super grindy. Last I knew, they had done more stuff to try to push for you to play a series of characters (removing zombies' ability to breed may have been part of that?), because someone thought the game wasn't grindy enough?

1) Am I remembering correctly and 2) Is that still a thing?

Making a good character always seemed to be about finding 2-3 paths to power (fishing, music, gods, ranching, nuking cities, collecting coins, drinking every fountain, prostitution) and doing them until you got tired of it/found some dumb new thing to do for a while. Also, there were dungeons. The fact that being an adventurer was an option, but usually only used to get something you could use for your other plans and ignored as soon as you could, in a game based on ADOM (a pretty solid chassis), was great to me.

Elona+ is much less grindy than older Elona.

Amongst many new things and rebalancing Elona+ lowered the identify scrolls price a lot so you don't need so many hours spending trying to find money to buy a single identify scroll only to discover an item was complete crap.

Additionally it allowed to train spells by batch with money, cutting hours of repeatitively using the same spells over and over.

All in all Elona+ is much more enjoyable than old Elona, there's still grind involved but it's more fun than the boring type of grinding from old Elona.

And the custom mod adding translation of the actual story (that old Elona had completely removed in the english version) gives another layer of fun, even if the story is simple at least it gives meaning to some of the things that are happening.

Ah, this game.

As with so many roguelikes, it seems interesting, but I kind of wind up dropping it 'cause I can't figure it out.

Still, posting to watch.

Looks interesting, I'll try it out.

Any decent builds you might suggest, by any chance?

At the moment the most up to date Elona+ that feature the most complete english translation is this one :
http://elona.wikia.com/wiki/Thread:29336
It also features some tweaks the author prefer

The other Elona+ + english translation is slightly behind and does not feature the tweaks of the previous :

Been a while i didn't play after finishing the 1st part, will have to get back to it.

Mostly just avoid casters and mutation for your first few characters, they require stronger game knowledge to run.

A Juere Pianist is a classic start that functions pretty well (provided you make good use of pets for combat and are careful about not getting stoned by high-leveled NPCs while performing). A Juere Claymore is a solid melee setup centered around evasion and 2H swords (and my personal favorite).

Really, pretty much everything can be made viable. You have to be new and playing blind or deliberately hobbling yourself by doing something like playing a Snail to have an above-average amount of trouble. That's not to say you won't die from time to time, but in Elona(+(C(-G))) that's less of a deal than most roguelikes.

Last time i won the 1st chapter of Elona+ (old Elona had only this chapter) it was with a Lich Wizard , it was a very solid base.

I remember seeing this game a couple years back but didn't play past the little cave house you start in. Playing it now and I got to the first town so that's progress.

Is there a way to examine thing on the ground? When I was in design mode in the house I could mouse over stuff to see what it was but that doesn't seem to be the case when just oooot and aboooot

I also equipped some rocks for a ranged weapon but I can't take them off. They aren't cursed, but they are 'scary' (E: it is cursed apparently, I had to identify it first)

I also assume to save manually you have to exit the game? There's no 'save and continue' sort of thing?

Can you change the name of your pet? I saw I could change my own name using the 'i' button

E: What the hell? I'm wandering around town and suddenly my bear pet is fighting a goblin and a giant squirrel? My pet bear just exploded into gore...

Is there any reason why sometime when I try to attack an enemy I will instead move into its spot and it will move beforehand? Sometimes it makes me move into places I don't want to go.

F1 engages quicksave, although the game autosaves at regular intervals and after using certain items.

"i"nteracting with them should bring up the same menu.

Probably a cursed item or an item with "it attracts monsters". Note that it might not be you or your pet wearing it, but the npcs.

Some types of enemies aren't generated hostile, using "i"nteract to attack or shift+move to attack.

I was walking into enemies, I think it might just sometimes have me double-move and I don't know why.

In any case, I'm having trouble making any money. I keep failing the lowest level quests and I'm having to constantly buy booze because I keep getting thirsty and I heard bad things happen when you drink from the well and I don't know of any other way to prevent thirst.

Once I figured out how to revive my bear I was able to walk more than 2 feet into the puppy dungeon without having to retreat, but the thirst thing is keeping me from going too far in...

E: Oh yes, and highwaymen just stole all my food cargo

Depending on what race you started with, monsters may have more speed then you, which means they will occasionally take multiple turns depending on the difference.

Early game, delivery and escort quests are your main source of income. I wouldn't bother with combat missions as you're probably not properly set for them regardless of what class you chose (unless you're playing as a god race or something). Be wary of time limits, and things missions with ambushes like "Beauty and the Beast" quests. Seven league boots trivialize most of these missions, so keep an eye out for a wish.

Drinking from a well can be bad, but can be mitigated with some knowledge. Stat downs are as common as stat ups, and most mutations are often stronger versions of both. Unwanted pregnancy can be aborted by an easily obtained potion of dye.

Thirst... is a new mechanic which a lot of players find annoying, but it's not too hard to deal with. Use your house board to put down a walkable water tile and stand on it. Your hydration will gradually increase; same for water tiles you find in dungeons.

For more portable hydration, you should look into obtaining a juice mixer or pot of fusion. Juice mixers can usually be found in the cyberdome for about 6k before negotation, while pots of fusion is occasionally found in general/furniture stores. Juice fruits from fruit trees that you find in towns, and crimberries can be turned into 8 blessed crim ale in a pot of fusion with 2 alchemy skill, which also fetch a pretty good price in shops.

Highwaymen will attack randomly if you have any form of cargo, and giving into them will result in them taking your money, so I wouldn't recommend relying on them until you're fairly strong. So consider scavenging instead. By pressing enter on a tile without a building or city, you can freely enter the wilderness. Hunt down edible wild plants, healthy leaves, crimberries, chestnuts, and api nuts. Of those listed, only edible wild plants rot, and learning cooking will up their nutritional value. The wilderness regens each time you enter it, so you can build a sizable stock of portable rations.

Maaaan, all these recent posts and entertaining newbie impressions are making me want to give this game another try.
Don't remember getting very far in it in the past... I have hazy recollections of a very surreal, somewhat entertaining exercise in frustration.

Something i was doing a lot in the early game was to keep clearing the 1st and 2nd floors of the Puppy Cave (and further floors once character is stronger of course), this to fetch tons of objects, identify them (once they're identified once further items of the same type does not need identify anymore) and sell them when they're not good for my character.

Some of those early items can sell for a lot of money, and grinding in this first dungeon is also a good way to get xp and training for both your character and his starting ally without too much risk (as the exit isn't far to get to safety, as long as you don't go too early in the lower floors)

After that  once your character is started doing easy missions from the town boards helps a lot.
And getting more allies helps, because it means more firepower. Get more charisma to allow to recruit more.

edit : forgot the carpentry skill
Buy it from one of the trainers in some city and get a carpenter tool (it's sold in shop but can be found in dungeons) , put it in your house and use it , you can manufacture rods and of course sell them
Materials required are found everywhere in dungeons, in those specific spots in which you can gather things (and why it's a good idea to grind a bit in Puppy Cave as you'll run into lots of them and gather enough material)

It's been a while, and I never got especially far in the game, but as I recall, one of the great ways to make some extra cash early on is to look at the "I want *item*" quests - both the "steal it from this guy" and the "however you get it" kind (for both, the quest giver only actually cares if you give them the item, doesn't matter where you get it).

While *item* might be something ridiculous, it's just as likely to be some piece of junk that you can pick up from a dungeon or in town.
