Resistance, An XCOM:2 Arms Race
« on: January 14, 2019, 05:13:07 pm »

Welcome to Resistance, An XCOM:2 Arms Race.

The year is 2036, 20 years after the Invaders first arrived. Initially we stood united, but eventually humanity crumpled. Over those 20 years, the Aliens have established their rule over the globe, building ADVENT to serve their bidding. Around the world, faceless thugs patrol the street looking to stomp out any sign of human resistance. People who disagree with this new order disappear, and those that bow are allowed to exist. But not everyone bows.

You exist in the shadows. In the crumbling districts of Istanbul, human spirit refuses to lay down and die. In vacant lots, through furtive talk, resistance grows. Cells begin to arm themselves, strike out against ADVENT, and let it be known the war is not over. Inexperienced and under equipped, the only thing these Cells do not lack is the will to fight. Each cell has established themselves on the opposite side of the Bosporus to the other.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You are the members of the Cell in the East side of Istanbul. What makes you unique? What is your ideology, your history? And what is your name? Along with Cell background, all players may come up with a couple names they would like to see for the Operatives or VIPs.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to my humble little arms race. Before we get under way, each cell will have to develop a name for their resistance cell and some form of history/ideology for their cell. During this formative period, people can switch between the Cells before the first design phase if they find the history developing not to their liking, and wish to join the other Cell.

P.S. DO NOT SPY ON THE OTHER CELL. IT WILL NOT PLEASE ME.

We are the Romans Reborn. We fight for our dead empire, for our stolen history. Remember Constantine! Remember Caesar!

I mean, sure. We could also just be the Roman Empire reborn, since that's who the Byzantines regarded themselves as (The Roman Empire, not this modern "Byzantine" empire) :P

IDEAS

Quote from: Organization
Grand Lodge of Pan-Mediterranean Masonic Brothers

IDEOLOGY: Masonic ideology centers around a set of recursive ideals:
-Mastery of the world comes from knowledge of the world.
-To know is to have free will, and control your own destiny.
-To be able to control your own destiny, you must actively take part in a democratic government.
-Democratic government will allow the collective populace to take mastery of the world.

HISTORY: During the 18th century, Freemasonry spread to France due to its sanction by Napoleon. Though the illustrious empire soon fell, the Masons did not. After the Schism of the lodges during the 1860s, in which French lodges abandoned belief in God as a requirement for acceptance, a lodge in Occitania sought a change in scenery. It was soon renamed with a suitably utopian and liberal bent. As to where the masons would go to spread their word of unity and liberty, where else than the Queen of Cities itself?

Soon after arriving, the masons drew the unfavorable eye of the Ottoman sultans. Already known as the "Sick Man of Europe", the Empire would not stand agitators from within, in addition to those without. And so, the Grand Lodge went underground, slowly building up a power base as the years turned around it.

When the Aliens came, meetings of the lodge were whirlwinds of debate. Philosophy of every school was laid. Perhaps these aliens were misunderstanding our intent. Were we? Yet when ADVENT was established, the debate was silenced. These aliens were nothing more than another Ottoman Sultan, sitting on a throne built of fear gilt with only the thinnest facade of kindness. They were all the same. From the displays of power to the hatred of the rights of all men. Yet most of all, the ADVENT was just as sick as the old empire.

This time they would not wait and let others determine their destiny. This time, they would make the tyrants burn.

Being roman is just far too cliche. Let's add some liberty, shall we?

You could do that, but since this is anatolia, it would probably be less 'merica, more islamic fundamentalism.

So long as we call this city Constantinople I'm happy with almost anything.

Cell history includes the following:
We sent a solid chunk of our forces over to Anatolia, see if we could rile things up over there... Ended up revealing the original base's location, no one survived except the crew we sent off.
...oops.

My suggestion for our cell:
Quote
The city was old and decaying. It had been great once. Tevarin could distantly recall when these disintegrating streets that surrounded him thronged with people. He slipped from shadow to shadow, hiding in shattered storefronts and taking cover behind long abandoned cars. The streets were deserted. An advent dropship had flown past lately and the few desperate lingering souls left in the city had sought shelter fearing a patrol. Patrolling Advent usually fired first and wondered about details later. The thought of Advent weapons fire made the stub that remained of his left arm itch. Plasma was a bitch. He'd learnt that during the initial invasion when he caught a glancing hit from an alien plasma gun. All these years later he still caught himself trying to pick things up with the hand that he'd lost. Cautiously he checked his surroundings for movement. Nothing. Stealthly and lithly he made his way into a decrepit hospital.

He had been a patient here once, doctors had struggled to treat his horrific burns even as wounded, dying soldiers flooded the place around them. He remembered being taken down into the lower floors still half blinded by pain. He followed the same route now descending into the darkness of the hospitals basement, then into the subbasement, then into the second subbasement. All along his route the scars of alien weapon fire marred the walls. It was a convoluted route into pitch darkness but he knew his way by heart. Most hospitals had some form of emergency shelter in it's lowest floors, hardened and stocked with emergency supplies. Once upon a time the doctors pulled what wounded soldiers they could down here as the invaders had swarmed into the hospital above. By some miracle they missed the emergency shelter and moved on. With the doctors, nurses and staff the wounded soldiers had waited for rescue. Instead what they got was surrender, capitulation and abandonment. After the forces of earth surrendered what little order remained turned to chaos. The doctors and nurses could have run, fled, escaped with the remaining food and supplies or any number of things but instead they choose to keep to their duty. The soldiers were their patients and they would not abandon them. When supplies grew thin the soldiers in turn refused to abandon the doctors who had looked after them in the face of what seemed at the time to be Armageddon. Search parties consisting of the most intact of the surviving soldiers sought and returned with food. Things had changed little since then, some old faces had died some new faces had joined.

Tevarin stepped into the emergency shelter. Magazines were being loaded, food was being cooked and things were being repaired. The war for them had never really ended. It was all as it always was but yet there was a change in the air. For the longest time they had struggled just to survive, just to bring in enough food for everyone to eat and as a result had been unable to truly strike at the enemy. But something had happened, the Advent presence in this part of city that had previously made even stepping outside difficult had been drastically reduced. What he had learned is that they were being redeployed elsewhere leaving only a token force still in the city. As he shared this news with his friends and his brothers he could not help but smile. Whatever their reasons Advent would regret giving them this breathing room.
Name: Pandora's Blade
Description: Formed from wounded soldiers injured fighting against he initial invasion and the doctors that tried to treat them. Pandora's Blade is a stubborn organisation that values perseverance and loyalty to each other. Over the years they have sought out skilled technical craftsmen in order to keep their medical devices functional and have respectable engineering capacity as a result. Though in truth their focus lies in medical tech and cybernetics. Many of the wounded soldiers lost limbs in the first battles and they seek ways to restore these men to fighting shape.

It could work.  We could be the remnants of NATO SOF element operating in the Middle East.  Tried to regroup back to Europe but ADVENT locked down the borders before we could make it across the Bosporus.  We've since settled here, keeping up the fight while rally the steady trickle of our fellow operator brothers, NATO or otherwise.
